About to get my windows tinted and was wondering what the legal limit was... Also wanted to see what some of you guys had and how much hassel the cops give you. I want to go as dark as possible without getting pulled over for it all the time.. Also, any recommended shops in the Alpharetta/Sandy Springs area?
i believe in GA u need at least 35% transmission through the front side wondows and u can have it as dark as u want for the 3 rear windows i got mine done by superior tinting (404-328-6746)... he will come to u and tint your car... i think he charges $165
from what i gathered, the back 3 windows rule only applies to SUVs and trucks, passenger cars must be at least 32% all around and none on the windsheild. I've never heard of anyone getting busted for their tint. If you get the dark stuff just roll your windows down if you get pulled over so the officer can see you.
Self-bump guys... I know a lot of people on here have tint... What % are you at, where and how much did you pay?
I got mine done at Man Made Shade in Winter Park,FL. The tint is 15% in the rear and 30% in the front. It costs me 120.00. They even have a bowling alley next door so you can bowl while you are getting it done. This guy does excellent work!!. Mark
do 20%, althoguh having a yellow car that might stand out. its really a thing were you cang et caught or not.
My cars WRB now, so it won't stand out as much... I'm leaning towards 20%. Or maybe 15 for the back windows and 20 in the front.
Kinda paranoid having it done outside... dust, bugs, grass etc... but if he hooked you guys up with no issues I might give him a call...
20% all around. No issues so far. I actually asked two Gwinnett police parked in a strip mall lot, and they said that in general they don't stop you unless they cannot see in the car. They looked at my 20% job and said that it was no darker than factory SUV rear windows, and that they could see in enough not to feel "threatened" during a traffic stop.
Yea I got 20% all around dont like it cause you can see in but the police dont mess with me..they just stare cause the here me hehe
Just got my tint done today at Auto X tremes in Alpharetta... They did a great job and it was fairly quick. I got 20% all the way around. Its not as dark as I'd like but I don't want any trouble with the Po Po's...
Yeah, any darker than 20% and the cops may have a problem with not being able to see a silouette at least.
Anybody with the 20% have problems with night visibility? or racing (autox)? I am interested in it mostly for the asthetics, but I don't want to comprimise visibility especially racing at fairly high speeds.
I've had 20% on several cars and never really had an issue driving at speed or night driving with it. I wonder if putting 20% black tint on a black car makes it more cop-obvious.
Hehe, it's too natural to want to drive these cars fast, my first "mod" was a radar detector since the world tends to pass by you quiclky in these Suby turbos.
Wish I could, my ex-gf got the digital in the break up... if I could figure out how to post pics with my camara phone we'd be all set....
I'll give it a try monday... I'm pretty pc illiterate(which is ironic considering I work with mainframes for a living).... She looks pretty tight with the new tint and 05' taillights..
32.5 is actually the legal limit of tint. And depending on the judge that is 32.5 all the way around, just not a real good way to test the back or any window that does not roll down. Some guys will actually carry around tint samples and compare...yes there were guys like that at the dept I worked for in Duluth. Some cops will actually look for tint to pull over as they believe this might be an indicator of other things if it is super dark. Some cops, like I was, feel it is more the spirit of the law and think as long as you can see through it and it is not like 5% then it is fine. Now 32.5 translates into using 35 film as there is about 2.5% tint naturally in the window itself. 35 is kinda light though. My wife has 20 on her 05 mustang and we have been spoken to a couple times about it by police. Never a ticket yet, but that is probably due to her being a female with large....tracks on land and a small figure! I am still debating to go legal on my rex or take it to 20. At night 20 is kinda hard to see out your rear view, but not that bad.
i have 15 % on mine and the guy i went to in peachtree city did an awesome job it was under the table though b/c anything under 35 is illegal i think anything less than 15 would be too hard to see at night
Yeah, I ended up going with 20% all around an I'm happy with it. I'd prefer darker but I don''t need to be doing any thing 'additional' to piss of the 5.0
I believe since the vehicles are AWD 32.5% only applies to the front two windows; the rest can be as dark as you want.
i doubt AWD has anything to do with it... i read up on the TX laws before i moved to dallas... there they required at least 35% on the front 2 windows... if you had external side mirrors on both sides, the u could make the other windows as dark as u want
Taken from a post by Organized N Tint(off Covington Hwy) GA Law only allows me to go 32% on all windows, except on MPV ( multi purpose vehcile) Trucks, vans, SUv, and cars with AWD. those are only regulated on the front two. I can give you a quote on 35% though.
I got the lightest possible with the highest UV rejection I prefer it that way - i laready have a black car Yes I paid premium for a higher quality ceramic tint to reject UV and heat. Also because the SAABs have th internal radio antenne
40-8-73.1 (a) As used in this Code section, the term: (1) 'Light reflectance' means the ratio of the amount of total light that is reflected outward by a product or material to the amount of total light falling on the product or material. (2) 'Light transmission' means the ratio of the amount of total light, expressed in percentages, which is allowed to pass through a surface to the amount of light falling on the surface. (3) 'Manufacturer' means a person who produces or assembles a vehicle glass-coating material or who fabricates, laminates, or tempers a safety-glazing material, which material reduces light transmission. (4) 'Material' means any transparent product or substance which reduces light transmission. (5) 'Multipurpose passenger vehicle' means a motor vehicle designed to carry ten persons or less which is constructed on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off-road operation. (b) Except as provided in this Code section, it shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle in this state: (1) Which has material and glazing applied or affixed to the front windshield, which material and glazing when so applied or affixed reduce light transmission through the windshield; or (2) Which has material and glazing applied or affixed to the rear windshield or the side or door windows, which material and glazing when so applied or affixed reduce light transmission through the windshield or window to less than 32 percent, plus or minus 3 percent, or increase light reflectance to more than 20 percent. (c) The provisions of subsection (b) of this Code section shall not apply to: (1) Adjustable sun visors which are mounted forward of the side windows and are not attached to the glass; (2) Signs, stickers, or other matter which is displayed in a seven-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver or signs, stickers, or other matter which is displayed in a five-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest the driver; (3) Direction, destination, or termination signs upon a passenger common carrier motor vehicle if the signs do not interfere with the driver's clear view of approaching traffic; (4) Any transparent item which is not red or amber in color which is placed on the uppermost six inches of the windshield; (5) Any federal, state, or local sticker or certificate which is required by law to be placed on any windshield or window; (6) The rear windshield or the side or door windows, except those windows to the right and left of the driver of: (A) A multipurpose passenger vehicle; (B) A school bus, any other bus used for public transportation, and any bus or van owned or leased by any religious or any nonprofit organization duly incorporated under the laws of this state; (C) Any limousine owned or leased by a public or private entity; or (D) Any other vehicle, the windows or windshields of which have been tinted or darkened before factory delivery or permitted by federal law or regulation; or (7) Any law enforcement vehicle. (d) The Department of Motor Vehicle Safety may, upon application from a person required for medical reasons to be shielded from the direct rays of the sun and only if such application is supported by written attestation of such fact from a person licensed to practice medicine under Chapter 34 of Title 43, issue an exemption from the provisions of this Code section for any motor vehicle owned by such person or in which such person is a habitual passenger. The exemption shall be issued with such conditions and limitations as may be prescribed by the Department of Motor Vehicle Safety. (e) No person shall install any material upon the windshields or windows of any motor vehicle, the installation of which would result in a reduction of light transmission or an increase in light reflectance in violation of subsection (b) of this Code section. (f) The Department of Motor Vehicle Safety is authorized to promulgate such rules and regulations as may be necessary to carry out the provisions of this Code section. (g) Any person who violates subsection (b) or (e) of this Code section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.
Aight so if you can make a serious arguement for : (A) A multipurpose passenger vehicle then you might have an arguement, but other than that: Which has material and glazing applied or affixed to the rear windshield or the side or door windows, which material and glazing when so applied or affixed reduce light transmission through the windshield or window to less than 32 percent, plus or minus 3 percent, or increase light reflectance to more than 20 percent. the 32 % is going to stand. Trust me, I was a cop for 5 years and was on the roadside with the guys giving the tickets. I never in my 5 years gave a ticket for this except for one time when it was 2% and the guy was an ass and talked his way into a ticket. GA law has held in court that with the exception of SUV's, not much else has been classified as a multipurpose vehicel. AWD is not going to hold up when you are riding around on 18 inch low profile street tires. The main reason for the SUV's is that quite a few of them come tinted 20% from the factory in the rear. If you order you vehicle from the factory and it is done there at 20% you are fine, but you better have some documentation to prove it in court if you should get cited. Also it is pretty easy to tell factory glass from window tint...believe the poster in the tint shop if you want, but there is GA law.
