Ok arnoldwrx on the forums has a vf34 for sale for $650 dollars. Is this a good deal?

thats a pretty good price depending on how many miles are on the turbo..id go with the vf34 over the vf39

I want a vf39 but they seem hard to find. Do you know what i would need to go to the vf34?

sti pink injectors, fuel pump and engine management would be required... an intercooler upgrade would be beneficial though not necessary

A vf34 would probably be a better option for the WRX. 650 is not a bad deal at all for the 34. You need to check how many miles the turbo has on it. Most gasoline turbos only last between 150k-250k miles. To see if you are getting a good deal, take the number of miles the turbo has on it and divide by 250,000. Multiply that number by the actual retail price of a new vf34 and that is about what you should pay for, actually a little less would be a "deal". You would need the same setup as for a 39, injectors, fuel pump, and engine management. Pink injectors are fine, Walhboro fuel pump, and I prefer the Cobb, but Milo has an inexpensive ECUtek for sale.

I believe the design on the VF34 allows the turbo to spool faster than the 39, but they can support about the same amount of power on the WRX (~300hp).

the vf34 should give you the extra umph you are looking for.

Or a new 16g for $699 from forced performance...maybe less from one of our sponsors. Sorry had to throw it in for comparison. I noticed there is also a turne in cobb off the shelf for the 16g, sti intercooler and pinks.

a 16g= great daily driver + a stronger turbo than any of the ihi ones.

i wouldn't necessarily agree with that... all depends on what u want from your car... here are some flow rates i found online:

    IHI VF-22
    440 CFM at 14.7 PSI
    490 CFM at 18.0 PSI

    Small 16g
    505 CFM at 14.7 PSI
    490 CFM at 22 PSI

so the VF22 flows less at low loost but at 18 psi it can match the flow rate of a small 16g at 22psi

usually if the 16g is not described as a large 16g or a super 16g, it is a small 16g

Also, I have yet to see any dyno numbers from the 16g that blow the VF34 or VF22 away.

I have seen a regular 16g making 306 hp and 307 tq with supporting mods of course. The super 16g I have seen close to 340's, but that is an extra $150 for a grand total of $850. The VF-22 is a nice turbo too as is the VF-34. The VF-34 and the 16g I have heard are pretty close to even as far as performance, it's just, to me, a question of being able to rebuild and upgrade that makes a big difference. It is my understanding that the 16g can be upraded to a super 16g or 18g later if ya decide for something more.

Milo what does the standard 16g flow at 18 psi....and what does the vf-22 flow at 21 psi?

i dont know man..340 is a bit high..maybe on meth it would be capable of producing those numbers but i dont think a super 16G alone will hit those numbers.

I don't really know, I have read so much lately on so many different people's set ups that it is hard to remember which was which. I just remember that number stuck in my head for the super 16g...they do flow 550 cfm. Maybe it was the upgraded 16g->18g that made the 340.

are you sure? you have started 2 threads about 4 different turbos..I would do a little more research on all of them and decide what kind of hp you want to be making

my super 16g made 340 whp on methanol with a top mount... before meth i made between 270 and 290 depending on day/dyno... however i when i switched to meth, i found out that my factory recirc valve was leaking... so i dunno if the leak was an issue before i had meth... anyways, i haven't seen dyno numbers comparing the output of the super 16g and the vf22/vf34 with similar setups in atlanta... i saw something on nasioc a while back that showed the super 16g outperforming the vf22 on pump gas

The VF22 is nice if the turbo is right next to your exhaust manifold, but not in our cars. The compressor side is larger than most any turbo, that is why its top end is great, but low end sucks. Stick with the vf34 or 16g.

    found this in another thread:

    18G + Meth + FMIC should be near 350 whp on a wrx... Super 16G + TMIC + Meth was 340 wlb-ft 337 whp on a wrx...
