He just curious what a leaky bov sounded like. I think mine may be leaking. I noticed that the pitch of the sound varies and with the new silicon hose for the bov I can hear it better. Is the Bov/recirc valve supposed to leak boost at part throttle or is it the wastegate that is supposed to regulate that? I am a bit confused. I notice a whistling sound that changes every time I shift, but it is the same noise, just different pitch. Anyone know what I mean? I know miloman said his was leaking previously. Any thoughts?
a leaking BOV would be not tight to the TMIC...missing a gasket would do this...if you have an intake you can hear a re-spool like noise....
ya kinda sounds like that...Guess I need a new recirc valve. It has a gasket and it is not leaking there, checked it with water. I think it is recirculating when it does not need to be/leaking boost back into the system.
the stock BPV can handle close to 22psi... so unless yours is defective, i doubt yours is mechanically leaking... mine was leaking on my WRX but i was running close to 23psi... i couldnt hear it leak though... on my STi, we had a BOV leak because it didnt seal well with the TMIC... so i double gasketted it and its been fine ever since... that one i could hear... sounded like i had 10 kittens stuck in the radiator fan
no, no does not sound like that, I dunno, maybe i should let someone hae a listen who knows what the hell they are listening for. But is the gate what regulates boost or is the BOV the regulator on part throttle operation?
try to isolate it if you can hear it at idle then get a wooden dowel 1/2-3/4 diameter 2feet long and use it as a stethescope
the BPV is not used to regulate boost... all it does is let excess pressure out when it isnt needed... if u didnt have a BOV or BPV, the excess boost would try to escape backwards through the turbo, making it spin the other way
Ok, then I probably should not hear it when I am spooling correct? I can not hear it at all at idle. I only hear it at part throttle (kinda spirited, but not all out) acceleration and when I shift. Seems like it may be recirculating boost even when I am not needing it to...wonder if the spring is dead on it or it is faulty. That seems like it would be a pretty good reason for the rich conditions I am experiencing and the lack of full boost, slow spool. I can hear it recirculating all the time and I hear it release all pressure when I shift. Sometimes it does not even do that and the RPM's will stay up after I let off the throttle for a few seconds.
ok went out and did not log, but had a friend watch the boost gauge and call it out to me...the cobb meter was used to read it. At a set point with my foot on the gas, flat road, the boost climbed to about 5 psi then slowly bled off. I tried this several times at part throtle and it seemed to bleed off every time. With RPM's not climbing I would think that the boost would stay the same right? Maybe slight fluctuation, but not bleed off? Again, first turbo car so not sure about these things... Anyone?
Unlike that it's the BPV. If no pressure is bled off the actuator line then you'll see a max of 7psi or so; maybe this is what's going on.
sent ya a pm moose. I guess my real question is should it hold solid boost at a set RPM or is it supposed to bleed off?
well so far have some people on nasioc saying it should hold boost at a stable rpm...mine is not. Either gasket, bov (factory), or boost leak.
it SHOULD hold boost. at a stable rpm and NOT bleed off. sorry i misunderstood your question. look like you might want to check out ur y-pipe and get some new y-pipe and bov gaskets
Brand new y pipe gaskets. They came with the new IC. I will try a new BOV gasket though. I guess I can check the torque on the bolts of both y pipe and bov again also, but don't think that is the issue...it really sounds like it is the bov releasing air...I can hear the tone change when I shift. Guess i will see.
i dont remember the stock boost curve but my cars have been tuned by SS and he always implements a boost taper
That is where it just goes down after 4k rpms right? Mine is doing that now with cobb stage 2 map. Oh well, will try the gaskets then see how it feels. I really need to get a boost gauge so I don't have to keep plugging in the AP.
i honestly dont think u have any problem here... a whooshing sound when u accelerate is expected and it isnt coming from your BOV... is there anyone close to u with a modded WRX/STi?... have them ride with you and they can let you know
Honestly I am not sure. I have seen several around the area, but have not met any from here. I may just try the gasket (what like $5) and if that makes no change, wait till I get the new turbo (if Tray ever writes back) and let the tuner play with it.
Ya bad part is most of em are during work time. I usually have weekends off, and I was at a certain meet (scavenger hunt) and someone was missing...
my attendance at either one is not guaranteed... in fact my attending events is going to be a little flaky till the end of september... got way too much on my plate however, jason should be able to tell u if the sound your car is making is normal
Ahhhh so all the stuff Ken said about you going out and posing as a transvestite prostitute in Little Five Points IS TRUE!!! J/k hope you can make it to something sometime soon, but I understand obligations.
Got the gaskets today btw...install hopefully toorrow. Just a new one or a double? Not seeing how a double will help, but several have recomended it.
Ok installed the new gasket, noise seemed to quiet a bit. Also when at WRXfan420's place I got to ride with him in his vehicle. We plugged in the AP and I was able to watch and see what his boost was doing at any gien RPM. I guess it is natural when holding at a set rpm for the boost to fade back down. At least that is what is happening on both of our cars. It goes up to around 5-7 psi then slowly bleeds back down. I guess that if it is not climbing the computer automatically decides to let it fade back down. So, conclussion, while his turbo does not seem to make the same noises that mine does, he also has different DP and exhaust. Mine may have had a tiny leak in the BPV gasket. Getting a new gasket is worth the $6 when installing a new IC or BOV. Also his BOv is a Forge 100% atmospheric and it did not stutter or bog in the least between shifts as soome claim that the 100% atmospheric valves do. But, he also has a custom tune from Scott Seigel on his car. Could make a difference.
Wait, you're seeing 5-7 at part throttle that bleeds off? That's entirely normal; I thought you were seeing that as MAX boost. There's just not enough load to continue producing boost, and that's why it creeps down.
Ya 5-7 at part throttle held at a certain rpm. Like half throttle at 3500 RPM cruising on a road. But yeah found out it is normal
Ok after installing the new intake I can hear the air recirculating at partial boost and actually hear the PBV open and close....it is not actually closing until up to 7 psi some times. And even when it is closed you can stil hear a bit of a leak...got a new bpv/bov on the way. I found a GFB 50/50 for a bill. I guess we will see if this is my issue or if I am just paranoid.
