Not to sure how fast this ones going to move but I'm going to try and take pictures and write something every time I touch the car. Pictures will be added as soon as I start tearing the car apart. Sep.17 2006 : Oil pressure dropped from 80 psi to 40 psi. Ended up with the knock of Death. Called Amber had her dad bring the truck and trailer and off to the house we go. Sep.18 2006: I decided my best route of travel with this car is going to be 2.5 Sti swap block wrx heads and a few other goodies that im try9ing to get. Got home from work took the subie off the trailer 5 psi oil pressure on idel and 80 psi on start up which should be 110 on start up and 30 on ideal. Sep 19 2006Pulled most of the small stuff off so I could get the motor mount and get ready to get the old motor out. only worked on it for about 30 to 45 mins so not a lot was done, but more then I figured id get done. Tomorrow should be the alternator and everything on top and get it done to pretty much nothing but block heads and transmission. Sep 23 2006 Got all the coolant lines fuel lines and all wires disconnected All that is needed to be removed now it the Bolts to the drive shaft the transmission mount and motor mount and Out she comes. Its actually a lot easier then I thought I working in between storms today so I'm only able to work on it for about 20 mins at a time. Hopefully later on tonight ill be posting the pics of an empty engine bay My shopping list as of now is: Sti block $1549 oil pump $119 water pump $100 Gasket set $320 (WRX gasket kit with STi head gaskets) might be 2001 2.5rs gaskets timing belt $120 fuel pump $99 fuel filter $25 750 cc or 800 cc injectors Im out right now, no ETA Arp head studs Dont have a source on these Id Recommend an STi oil pan as well. Tools so far needed: basic socket set Breaker bar 10 mm Allen wrench 1 1/8 open end 12pt 14mm 6mm bolt for the clutch pin 24mm extra deep for oil cooler 22mm for crank pulley
Its ready to come out except for some reason one of the motor mount bolts is stripped so now i have to deal with that....and not to mention the damn weather
Ran into a snag while pulling it out seems the transmission didnt want to let go. Ill finish it up tomorrow.
The last picture i was thinking is this crap really worth it and as always am i in over my head....as i said before the bulkhead install
I am envious...I so want to do this, but I just think it would be more than I am comfortable with...I have done the engine on old chevy v-8's and even done a swap of a inline 6 to a v-8 but I just don't know the subbies yet.
LOL, as soon as I saw that picture and read the caption, I laughed and said clutch fork. Everybody does it. Matt
I got it to seperate but not lal the way something on the bottom is sticking but it started raining so i had to stop for a few
Its finally out. Now time to break it down and get it all tore apart and get the new block ordered and start putting everything together Not to bad for 2 days and crappy weather and pretty much doing it by myself.
80kish on the motor i think i have to do the math. Not to sure what cause it ive been told 1. drop a valve 2. slug a rod 3.spun a rod berring ill find out this week sometime I got to get an engine stand tomorrow and ill start tearing it apart
Effin awesome pictures bro. I love it when people do this kind of ish in their driveways. Good job so far and good luck with it all. BTW I'm using one of the motor pics. Just gonna crop out the motor and photochop it onto a vette or something. Lol.
Well today decided to start breaking the motor down and learned a little something. When taken Intake maniafold off there is no reason to undo the Fuel rails. 4 12mm bolts on each side and everything pops right off. anyways heres a few pictures i took alot more then this mainly for how the hell did this go referance type but all in all this i sgoig to be a semi easy hard job but im learning. Then my favorite of the day
Didnt get far at all today due to i kept breaking tools...but i figured out what i needed so i should get it apart tomorrow.
Finally got the cam gears,am and buckets out now i got to go buy another tool that i didnt know i would need. Also added the tools so far needed to do this figured it would help save people 900 trips to the store as im doing.
Man more awesome pics. I love seeing the engine come apart like that. I wish Will from SOG would chime in on this thread to give you some pointers and stuff. It's going pretty good though it looks like.
Nice foot man! All kidding aside and seeing the metal and the rub marks on the block from the crank rubbing, it reminds me of my old crankwalking DSM. I'd say it looks like your thrust bearing failed on ya and was allowing slight play in the crank which with the tight clearances is all it takes for a little contact to the galleys there. I'm surprised the EJ motor did that however I have heard of several other EJ205's doing that. Maybe ask Will (WJM) if he has ever seen that happen as he's been through a lot of engines. I'd myself like to know how common this is.
