I just got an e-mail yesterday saying that I was on the short list for a position at Lucent Technologies in Singapore. I should find out in 3-4 weeks if I get the job. It is for an Optical Solutions Consultant. Wish me Luck....This would be a permanent relocation. Mark:sx:
Good luck. That would be cool to get a job outside the country. You would have to set up a Paypal account so we can send you money to ship us parts.
best of luck a honda accord in singapore is like $100k USD and then you need to get into a lottery pool and to even get a ticket to buy a car is another $20k USD
s'pore is a fine city fine for spitting fine for chewing gum fine for not flushing fine for jay walking fine for everything
on the bright side You can get to every corner of the country by public transport - its one of the best in the world. You can have a family of 4 eat in a fancy place for $25 USD (of course asian cuisine). Singapore has advanced so fast that its not the best place to go shopping anymore, due to their strong currency.
Thanks Everyone...I didn't know I had all these friends...I should find out in 3-4 weeks...You saw the e-mail Scotty B...I really want that Skyline...LOL...I think that Lucent should know some great places to go to and to live also. I did some research on Singapore and it looks like a very nice country. Ming, have you actually been there?. Milo, Amol has been there right?. Mark
mark i was born in malaysia and go to singapore very often for 20 years i know the country well. if you cannot deal with summer here then you may need to reconsider because its 90+ deg F with 80+% humidity all year round. not too good for turbo cars as you know violations of any kind is the "ROTAN" (MALAY word for cane) its one of the cleanest and safest country in the world no one owns a gun in that part of the world, if you are even caught with a bullet you can be in deep dodo you will have a lot to do transfering personal belongings where to live expenses and relocation (out of pocket) taxable income you need to talk to someone in international relocation and the duration of stay & how often do you return back to USA Whatever you do know the laws and hold on to your passport
Well, being in the military for 13 years, I am very used to dealing with rules, so I don't mind. I didn't know that you were from Malaysia. Thanks for the info. I don't mind humidity either...I was stationed at Eglin for a while and I was also in Biloxi for a few years....I am sure that I could get used to it. It sounds very exciting to me... Mark
holy crap Mark...haven't been on the board these past few days as i was in FL on that buis. trip. good luck with that man! i know you'd have a blast over there. how many yrs would you be over there for? i'm sure you'd make nice buku buck...again g'luck dude!!!
are you kidding ? a few years ago didnt the kid made the world news Even the US embassy cant help him. The cane is no joke, in fact normal human can only survive at most 2 strokes per occasion and have to wait for weeks to receive the remaining. Violation in a foreign country follows the laws of the country that you violated in. You guys will be fine - speeding is not a problem just pay the ticket if you are caught There are a lot of street racing in the late nights. thats not true If anyone gets a chance to work in a foreign country for a short period - dont miss the chance. You will learn a lot and see various views and return to US with a different view in life. You do not know how good it is over here till you see the bad.
Having been born and spent 20 years of my life in a foreign country, I have to say that while from a purely materialistic standpoint people are better over here, I think quality of life overall is far better at home for me. edit: I should qualify that. I have been places in the US where the quality of living is really far better than around here, but overall it's pretty weak.
I was stationed in Germany for a few years in the AF and loved it...I hope that this comes through...I am not sure whether Lucent will pay relo costs...The manager is researching this now... Mark I'm not into the street racing..but...I like to watch it.....on video... Mark
dont get the short end everything is negotiable especially in Singapore (ASIA) if you dont start negotiating now you will be buying a t shirt for $15 when i will be getting it for $3
Well, I guess I am going to SC.....for the position with SCANA...The manager e-mailed me back last week and said the position is on hold, but I am still on the short list... Mark
Cool man. I know that was what you wanted to do and obviously it's right or you wouldn't be wanting it. Remember to think about the stuff you'll want that you can't get overseas.
You got that right brutha...I am focused on my new position at SCANA now, but things change....:sx: Mark
