Quite strong. How much HP are you planning on making? Even these gears have a limit. A lot of people choose to retain their 5th gear because around 80mph you'll be a lil over 4000rpms. Honestly I think if you're going to be spending that much on a tranny that there are people who are selling built up transmissions that would save you a lot of money and a lot of trouble.
How much higher do you plan on going? I think you might be near the limit of the RA gearset. The concensus is that the RA is good for around 400-ish
I was told it could hold about 400 before cryo...I have the full set 1-5 and @ 85mph I am @ 4000rpm. I still managed to get 20mpg on a recent trip to Florida. The only complaint is that I seem to max out each gear @ a lower speed.... 1st - 45mph and stock - ? 2nd - 63mph and stock - 70mph 3rd - 85mph and stock - 95mph 4th - 110mph and stock - 120mph 5th - not that brave yet
What confuses me is why do all these great gearsets not have a ratio on 5th that allows it to be around 3k RPM at 80mph.
All these gearsets are made for acceleration and power available to you at all times. Get a 6speed with a really long 6th =P
Because shorter gearing makes 5th gear usable without having to downshift. I'm happy cruising 80mph at 3900rpm in my car because I can get full boost any time I want.

Why not get get a set of gears and get them triple shotpeened and cryo'd? That'll strengthen the hell out of your gears.
There is some vague sort of concensus now that the RA gearsets are no longer shotpeaned from the factory like they used to. They are apparently made by a different manufacturer than they used to be. Just some reading I did on Nasioc last night. I did hear that one vendor (Rallispec maybe) is selling a PPG 12 RA 345 set for around $2900 though. This might be a really good combo for a VERY decent price. Edit: a bit more than I thought. Maybe a special they had going on Nasioc. I would look for pricing there then contact them.
If you get the gearset you can get it sent out to be triple shotpeened and cryo'd yourself. That should make it a bit more durable
There's a place in atlanta that does cryotreating. I could ask if they know anyone that does shotpeening or if they do it.
Gruppe-s does it that is where I got mine...Well Cryo for sure, not too sure what shotpeening is to comment. 1300 for the gearset is what I paid, I think.
The consensus is the RA's are only good for 350 hp. After that you are pushing them. If you are at 368 now I wouldn't go that route unless you baby that car and with 368 hp I doubt you do. I know it's more exspensive but the PPG gearset is virtually unbreakable within reason. Also a guy I know has the RA's and he said when traveling it sucked due to the ratios.
I think PPG 1-2 is around $1800...stock 3-5 might be ok, might not. I think Unabomber on Nasioc is running the ppg 1-2 stock 3-5 on his set up. The logic being that 1-2 are the most commonly broken. 3rd is up there too, but less likely unless you are really beating on it.
Cryo treating is not good for gears, I am at the airport right now and my internet connection is very slow so its hard to search for the article. Maybe one of the engineers can shed some light on it. There are other surface treatments that are better. Matt Oh if you plan on making above 400hp forget the RA gearsets, you are already pushing their limits right now. Matt
Quite a few are now saying that the dimensions of the stock 03+ gears are the exact same as the RA gears as far as width of the gear face. Some say that at the base they are a bit wider. Not sure who to believe, but at 368 to the wheels I think almost everyone would agree you need something more. At least in 1-2 if not 3-5. I am not sure if you can just get 1-4 but that might be slightly cheaper and would be able to hold almost anything you throw at it. No sense having to pay for 2 gearsets and installation on 2 gearsets (broken RA then PPG after) when you can save up some more cash and do it right the first time. Just my curent thought process. Supposedly the helical cut gears are still super strong compared to factory and RA. Shotpeaning will give a 20% increase in strength. There is still a debate as to the strengthening if any of cryo. Go for something stronger. I hope to get at minimum ppg 1-2.
Unabomber has 1-4 PPG's. I had the pleasure of driving a straight cut 1-4 PPG car this past weekend. Excellent gears and talk about good feeling! Dude told me to go ahead and launch.....I launched it at 5500 rpm and it took a frog leap outta the hole! Hahaha I bet he nearly crapped himself seeing me launch like I do as I am willing to bet it cut a 1.5 60' compared to how mine feels. They are loud as crap though but not 'that' bad. I'm still going 1-2 straight and 3-4 helical. I can't wait to get mine.
Really? I saw tons fo posts with him saying he had the 1-2 stock 3-5 and how he is a big proponent of it... I guess he went back and got 3-4. Has anyone actually broken a set of the helical gears PPG gears? I am wondering what the advantage of going straight on 1-2 is over having a full helical 1-4.
Just as an update, Unabomber is currently running a 1-4 helical ppg, but is really not testing it at this point. He is only putting down like 250 to the wheel right now.
Syncros, but Ill probally be getting rid of this one soon and getting a straight cut dog box, in the previous post I said I had a helical but what I have is a straight cut syncro box. Sorry for the confusion
Are you just going to the dog for speed or are there concerns about the power level that you are running currently?
im running the rallispec non-ra version 6 cryo treated gears. it replaces 1-3 and keeps the stock 4-5 which puts me at about 3400 rpms at 80 with a 4.44 rear end. im not sure how much power im making but im running a hyperflow on a catless sti motor and it seems to be doing alright.
