After mnay hours online and talking to people about what to do i ave finally decided to get a PPG gearset to replace my WRX gears of which i am currently driving without 3rd gear...kind of interesting getting used to shifting from 2nd to 4th. i wonder if when everything is fixed i'll shift that way the first time i get on it b/c i've been doing it for so long now. anyway going to order the gearset from SOG probably next friday

The straight cuts are the whiny ones. The helicals are a substantial bit quieter and they are almost just as strong. Get 1-2 straights and 3-4 helicals and you will be very happy!

Hey if you want a straight cut helical box, Ill trade you the one out of my car plus some cash for a straight cut dog box.

Mines out of the car right now while the new motor is going in.

ordered the gearset last thursday. i went up there today to check on it's status and elizabeth the parts manager has been out of town but she's going to check and see how long it will take. i'm not sure who she ordered from but i'm thinking somewhere around two weeks to get here. can't wait. also picked up some grommets for my POS front bumper.

If you didnt get the billet shift forks call back and order them, or you will regret it later.

Make sure you got all the right sycros as well.

What exactly do the billlet shifter forks do? Why are they better than the stockers?

They are WAY stronger than the factory ones.

i think that the previous owner installed an sti short shift kit...the only reason i think that is b/c i ordered and short shifter from cobb for my 03 wrx and when it came the shifter wouldn't fit b/c the fork was too narrow...any ideas? if it's and sti short shift kit would i still need the billet shift fork?

Sure, I got that, but what is the advantage? Are these internal to the tranny or the exernal shifter fork that hooks up to the gear shift? (I admit not a whole lot of knowledge of the transmission) How many shift forks does the transmission have? I saw a price on the site of $250...is that for one or for several? Sorry dumb newbie tranny questions. Thought about this for a while...why do these have issues getting bent? What causes them to bend?

i don't think any question is a dumb one and there are probably people who have the same questions but don't feel comfortable asking them b/c they feel dumb doing it. props for asking...so any one know the answer b/c i'd like to know as well

Shift forks are internal inside the transmission. They are what moves the components to get your car in gear. The external piece that pokes out the tranny isn't a shift fork....that's a clutch fork.

ahhhh ok. Got my terms mixed up, lol. so how many are there? One for each gear? So do you have to pay $250/shift fork to upgrade to the billet ones?

There are 3. One for 1-2, one for 3-4, and one for 5.

well the tranny finally quit on me while i was in coumbus so the car is sitting at my g/f's parents house in the driveway...SoG says it'll be early december before the parts come in so i'll probably rent a car and pick up the parts wen they come in and have someone do the install down there...life's a bitch right...hopefully it will all go well i know a really good mechanic in columbus who knows a LOT about trannys. that's where i'm at now so you wont see a yellow bugeye driving around for a while :-(

just got word that the new parts will be in this weekend so i have to pick them up and drive them to columbus to have them installed. don't know anything else to do. seems like to would cost more than it's worth to have the car towed to SoG. as much as that would make me more comfortable to have it done by SoG i'm pretty confident in this mechanic that i've found in columbus. oi vey

Why what's stopping ya from installing the PPG's? $$$$?

Isn't that what stops most people?! I wish I had the cash to drop on PPG's but they are apparently forged of platinum coated titanium.

Yep but two broken trannies will easily surpass that. Do it once and do it right.

I for one am still debating. I think the 6 speed is too tight and too close for me. I do a lot of long travels and I never autox. So long gears (5 speed) is more efficient for me. That's why my car whups most all the STi's at the strip.....while they are shifting an extra gear once I'm in 3rd and 4th my car is in one heck of a power band for a long time.
