This is going to get me in so much trouble because I know that Beth is going to read it, but hey Ill post it anyway. So I'm thinking of selling everything except the STI and Mustang and I'm going to buy.....a Porsche 911(993 specifically). I've always wanted one and I want something a little more challenging to drive on track. I don't want it to sound like I'm saying I've mastered the Subaru because that's not the cas, but I'm growing bored with it already and I want something RWD again. I want something really challenging to drive, something that takes extreme concentration and focus. So look for some big for sale threads coming soon, I'm adding a new garage onto the house so Ill have somewhere to put it. I'm starting to get giddy just thinking about it. Matt
Yeah. I know the bored with AWD thing all too well. I had a RX8 for about 6 months between 2 Subarus. I wish I had kept it cause it was more fun to drive on a day to day basis. I wish I had the option to go back to RWD. If I could do what you plan to do....I would do it.
You do... I can't remember the details, but saw something about a $700 dealie that converts your Suby to RWD. edit: http://rocketrally.com/managed/mod-CMpro-viewpage-pageid-91.phtml
I know stuff like that exists, but I don't want a RWD Subaru. I want a car designed to be RWD from the beginning.
Well Jeremy and I just got back from test driving cars, drove a C5 Z06 and a Lotus Exige, both are really freaking sweet, I'll be putting up a forsale add later tongiht with a bunch of stuff in it, I need to go drive a Porsche so that I can make up my mind. Matt
Oh, the Lotus! The Lotus! If I never had to carry anything but me and my sweety in my car.... Actually, I'd probably pick an Elise because I like looking out the center mirror, and the Exige has sooo much stuff in the way down the middle. 'course, if you're really looking for a track car, you'll want the supercharged Exige. You seen the vid when Top Gear raced an Exige against an attack helicopter around a track? DD
Well we were looking for cars for J today, but I got to test drive as well. The only problem with the lotus or Loti is that the platform limits you in a lot of ways, were as the Vette is like a blank canvas. Matt
Not sure about you, but I find the footwell box in the Lotus too small.... I'm sure it's a great car and uber fun to drive, but there was no way I could drive it that way. c5 z06 would be awesome as well. (But isn't that almost the same thing you've got going with the Mustang??)
Well if I bought the c5 I would probally make the mustang a dedicated drag car. The footwell of the Lotus is very tight, however if you wear driving shoes all the time its not a problem. Matt
The Exige is a pain in the butt for me to in and out of. MMMMMMMmmmm Porsche 993 turbo.....my dream car!
That's my main beef with the exige, there is no room period. Cobra R is cool, and I've always wanted one, however the problem with the Cobra R is that its like owning a Ferrari in some sense, you cant just buy motor parts you have to get them from ford and they are really expensive, the motor in the R is almost completely different than any other 5.4 ford produced.
Why not a C6 Z06? Only thing you would have to do to it was buy a set of race tires. IMO if I had the 70k to buy one there would be no other choice.
Man, Matt that will be tight if you purchase one of those. I hope that everything works out well for you and J. Mark
C6 Z06 is just plain sick. I test drove one and had the itch for one but alas I don't make enough money. That thing was STUPID fast and its STOCK! One day I may have one though.
I drive to hard to drive a 70K dollar car on track, there is no doubt in my mind that I will wreck a car on track at some point in my life and 30K I can deal with but 70K is a whole diffrent game.
The Bottom end is just a basic 5.4 however the heads are special castings that they used in the offroad race trucks, and the intake manifold is a one off peice for the R. The rear suspension is all very similar to the cobra but every thing has been altered slightly, the steering rack is diffrent etc... Lots of the parts you cant even buy unless you are an actual Cobra R owner. Matt
No one's even mentioned the 350Z yet. The top of the line track edition, or whatever they're calling it, is one extremely formidable car. If I didn't have to have a back seat that's how I would've went when I bought my car. Plus there is a ton of aftermarket hardware and support for it. Maybe even more than for the WRX, STi and Evo...
That is why I bought a jacked up stang to get slideways once in a while...some controlled out of control driving. Hard to do in the Suby.
Too many problems with the VQ motors, I really wanted one for a while but if you are going to make any real power, enough to keep up with a z06 anyway, then you have to sleeve the block and all that stuff. I'm really leaning towards the Vette, simple cheap reliable and fast.(I guess cheap is relative)
Yeah, but I have always wanted a 993 and I feel like it could be a truly longterm project car, I dont think its something I would ever really want to get rid of. Vettes are kinda a dime a dozen, they are doing nothing but coming down in value.
Problems with the VQ's huh? I guess you're talking about supercharged or turbo setups... That makes sense since it's a zingy NA motor. I've read so many good things about the balance and performance though. :hs:
Nope, when you do as many track days as I've been doing lately you get to talk to a lot of people, and the VQ people I have talked too have all had problems. Of course a lot of people have problems with Subarus but I havent so, take it for what its worth. Oh UPDATE, Jeremy found a Red c5 Z06 we are going to pick it up tommrow. Matt
There is a wrong and a right way to beat on a car and have fun with it. I would go for the Vette if I had to chose between a 993 and a C5. The 993 is one of my favorite body styles for the 911. It would just be cheaper to maintain the C5.
Well now that Jeremy has a C5 I dont really have any need to buy one, so I guess I could buy a nice Cherry 993 as a daily. Theres about to be a liquidation sale. Matt
Well, since Jeremy got the C5 z06 Ill probally just play with it for a while, we have an open policy on cars, he can borrow mine anytime he likes and I can borrow his. So Ill probally get it out on Track next month and see what it can do. It would be kinda fun if we had two of the same car to chase each other in. The 993 is a long term purchase, I dont see myself being able to purchase that until the middle of next year. Matt
Congrats on the purchase. Are you gonna get some MTI pieces for it? Or maybe a STS twin turbo? I totally understand you wanting rwd. That's one of the main reasons I'm selling my R32 in favor of modding the Cobra. The Cobra was SO much more fun at the track. When and where are you going to the track this month? I'm having withdrawals - not sure I can wait till the next Panoz day in March.
RIght now J is just having a good time driving it, I'm not sure what we are going to do to it yet. The Motor for my mustang is almost done so that will be up and running soon. 600hp should be real fun at road atlanta.
I talked to you at RA about your mustang. I thought you were putting down about 400-450hp with the turbo on the stock block. What else have you done? Once I sell the R, I'm thinking about a turbo or centrifugal supercharger. I don't think the KB's work as well on 5.0's as they do on the mod motors.
I've got two mustangs one fox body coupe with the single turbo, the other is a 2000 with a full maximum motorsports suspension and a world products 427 high compression motor. Its pretty sick or it should be anyway
Wow, nice! I'd like to check 'em both out. Will you be bringing either/both to the next Panoz track day or will you just be bringing the STi again? I had dreamed of putting a full MM suspension on my car, but started out cheap with the Bullitt kit. Hope to add some MM pieces along the way like torque arm, panhard bar, control arms and maybe a tubular K member one day.
The Bullitt kit is nice don't sell youre self to short. My 2000 I have had since new. I probally wont have it out at the next track day but I should be out with it by the end of the year
oh, if you want to learn about the cobra you should check out www.corner-carvers.com Make sure you post before you search read everything and make sure you go through all the read this first post before you post, they are really crazy and they will ban you in a second. Its the best resource for mustang race car info.
No awd, I'm just not into it, it becomes so boring to drive. At any rate the motor for the mustang is done and it should make around 600hp, that should hold me over for a while.
how many times have we heard, "im going to sell everything but the..." since ive finally got my new car, if you get another car, i get a dog.
