    Hey guys,

My front passenger Axle(cv joint) has been bad for some time now, and i need to replace it.

    my question is, should I:

    A) Buy a brand new Genuine Subaru axle from the dealer ship ($369.00)

    B) Buy a remanufactured one from advanced/autozone (~$100)

    or

    C) Buy a used one off a forum($???)

I am leaning toward a remand one, because its cheaper and i can get it locally.
Does any one know anything about the quality of the advanced/autozone ones?

    Thanks

How urgent do you guys think it is that i get a new axle? Is has been bad for about 8 months now. it makes poping sounds occasionaly and has some grease caked on the outside of it, though it does not seem to have leaked any recently

    thanks

I guess if its still working then there's no immediate harm. Watch the grease output though, once thats gone, the axel is gone.

What happens when there is no more grease, does the axle seize up??

The bearing cage will break and the axle will be like a stick in a cup.

Subarub Dealerships Now Offer Factory Remanufactured Axles If You Want To Go With A Reman Axle Thats The Way You Should Go. I Think They Are Around 260ish. Dont Get A Reman From Auto Zone Or Any Other Place Like That. I Work At A Subaru Dealership And Ive Seen To Many Aftermarket Axles That Are Not The Correct Lenght And Cause Problems With Binding Up The Front Diff And Cause Tranny Problems, Or Shimmys, Or Still Make Popping Noises On Turns. Also Are You Sure You Dont Just Need Your Boot Repalced With New Grease. If Your Boot Is Just Cracked And Leaking Grease You Could Just Have That Repaired And You Would Only Be Spending Around 125 For Parts And Labor, But Thats Only If Your Boot Is Leaking And Your Axle Is Not Making Noises Already.

Let Me Know If I Can Help You Anymore. Good Luck

It makes poping sounds on occasion. but not while exculsivly while turning. if i jerk the car with the brakes it usually stops. the poping sound makes me think its more that just the boot.:wtc:

If i were to pick up a advanced/autozone one is there any way to tell if it is the right length, or if it would have problems??

    Thanks

I Have Seen Many Aftermarket Axles From All Different Companies, Didnt Matter If It Were From Advanced Or Autozone Or Any Other Place, About 95% Of All Suby's That Have Come In With Aftermarket Axles Have Had Some Sort Of Complaint Related To The Aftermarket Axle And We End Up Replacing Them With The Suby Reman Axle. Customers Think They Are Saving Money By Buying This Cheaper Axle But In The End They End Up Spending More. If It Were My Decision I Would Go With The Suby Reman Axle And Not Even Think About Any Other Aftermarket Axles Just Based On My Experience With The Problems, But Ultimately It Is Up To You To Take The Gamble On The Aftermarket.

If You Live Locally And Need Any Help With Install Just Pm Me And Maybe I Could Help You Out.

Does anyone recommend any special axle grease for the subies?

Good luck with the fix Clayton. My garage is always open.

Sweet man, Alex and I were comparing my Noltecs to his PDEs last night and the PDEs are lightyears ahead in terms of build quality. Be sure to read about adjusting/maxing out the castor :naughty:

You could look on nasioc, I've had a wierd whining noise for a while and was thinking that it might be my axels but now I'm leaning more toward output bearings. Either way you should not have to pay anyone to put your axels on cause when I did my clutch I had to practically take them out and its not that bad. In fact if you were in need of help I'll tell you the same thing I tell every one else I work for beer, just let me know man.
