so instead of getting the ppg gears installed i decided to put in an 07 legacy 6 speed tranny w/o DCCD into my 03 WRX. some of the parts including the tranny have to be shipped here and should be here by the end of the week and then good ole mr will at SoG is going to do the install.
it will cost about 8000 and the upsides are not having to mess with DCCD and the gears are longer in this tranny and the cost is about 1000 less than the sti tranny
ok now will is saying all of the parts are in but something about the tranny doesn't have a speedometer. not really sure how that works but apparently there isn't one even in the US and to get one would take 3-4 weeks. he said there probably isn't a way to have the shipping expedited and so now i'm not getting to get my car back for atleast that long provided NOTHING ELSE comes up. oh yeah and the speedometer is going to cost another 500-600 dollars. has anybody ever heard of this happening and how come it wasn't forseen? maybe im' just not meant to have my car back ever. who knows but it is really frustrating. i thought all of my troubles were over once i stopped going to topspeed for work on my car...
Speedo drive gear , reluctor ring, vss sensor, what about the speedo is missing? Must it be rewired and calibrated to run the WRX cluster after the missing speedo part is installed? That's just odd! Never saw a factory crate tranny that wasn't practically complete.
ok i heard from wil lthe other day and the part that is needed is supposed to be here at the end of this month. that is the last thing that is needed and then work will begin on the tranny swap. this is of course what i've been told and it is very subject to change. wish me luck and i'll keep you posted on how things are going and whenever it gets done i'll be more than happy to let everyone know how it drives
Yeah its because the speed sensor is different on the 03 vs the legacy. Are you getting a different driveshaft to make the leg tranny work? Are you still using the R160 rear diff?
Sounds like a hassle. I wouldve figured that the speedometer reads directly from the wheel speed sensors.
i think will said the r160 will still work and about the driveshaft...i'm not too familiar with transmission but isn't that part of the tranny? i'm getting the works. whatever it takes to do the swap is what i got. sorry i'm not more aware but if will reads this then maybe he can enlighten us phil
We are using the stock R160. Why? The 06+ 6MT's have the 1.1:1 rear output reduction. So rear diff is 3.545. All we need is the 6MT drive shaft and the R180 rear diff driveshaft snout for the diff. All bolt on. Done. As for the speedo... Aparently the 06+ legacy does not use a speedo gear inside the transmission. This means that the speed is read from the ABS for the cluster speedometer. This was something I did not know about. Thanks to the dealers whining too much, we did not get an 07 New Model Update class from SOA to tell us that. Thanks you cheap ass bastards. Anyways...tomorrow I'll call to make sure the front housing is still on schedule. The housing is needed from the 04~06 STi for the like stock speedo gear. I have in hand all the other peices. Just need the front housing.
quick update...will says he has the part and should be working on my car very soon. hopefully everything goes well and he doesn't come across anything else. should have my car back by dyno day. hopefully hopefully hopefully
I've got the transmission assembled. I had to order a few small things to complete the swap. They will be here monday and I should have the car ready before that weekend.
i saw your baby today, a bright and shiny new 6 speed gettin ready to make its home in your car. Making me want to get one too, heh.
i don't blame you one bit. i'll certainly post up when it's all done to let everyone know how it is. i have a feeling it's going to be like buttta. or really nice compared to what it was
i just heard from will and the trany is bolted to the engine now everything has to be put in the car and it will be ready for pick up later this afternoon. things are looking good and time is going slow due to anxiety, but it looks like the car will finally be done and i can drive it again.
It should be shiny....it freaking brand spanking new! Keep us updated man.....that's a lot of dough but at least it'll last.
someones doing the happyhappyjoyjoy dance right now... give us some impressions after the permagrin is gone.
i don't think the permagrin will be gone for a while but she just got back after a good deal of driving. it is amazing. i can't say enough about it but the car is awesome. i'm about to get out of here and go do some more driving. man does it feel good to be back in my scooby!!!!!!!!!!m it's like drving a brand new car now. it is a brand new car now. I LOVE IT!!!!!
i would just like to give a big shout out to all the guys at SoG for helping me with the swap. especially will the most honest tech i have ever come across. thanks you will for everything and all the patience you gave me with all my questions all the time. the car is better than expected and i love it!
if you're going to be at batlground on sat i can contribute then. otherwise let me know another way i can get you some cash
it is awesome. mostly to have a car back but also to know that i finally have a tranny that can handle what i dish out i haven't gotten all the way on it yet b/c i'm still getting used to the tranny itself but it's great having the car in perfect condition.
Just curious what this housing you talk about actually is and what it cost? I am considering a similar swap and wondered exactly what parts you need to purchase? I would like to figure out all the parts so I can see what the parts portion is going to cost. So far what I can see: -transmission -driveshaft-which one is able to be used? Can you use an automatic driveshaft? -speedometer housing? -new axels? -new hubs?
Mike, send me a PM and I'll tell you all about it...I'm on vacation tho, so it may be a day...or more before I PM you back.
it did dyno well. i have to admit that i was a little nervous but it held up very well and i am very happy with the end product!!
well now that i've been driving around for a little while i'd jsut like to say that the tranny is still awesome. the new gearing is sweet. it's got just a little bit of a whine to it and that is what i like. i think if i had gone with the ppg gears the whine would not have bothered me at all. i would have gone through gas like a bitch though. anyway i think i am the only one in the country with this setup. that's kind of cool to me.
