Atlanta Region 2007 Autox Schedule

I am happy to announce that the much awaited (and somewhat overdue) Atlanta Region Solo schedule is now available. Purring together this season’s scheduling has been extremely difficult. Thanks to the efforts of Joel Fehrman, it is now complete. Neither one of us feel this schedule is perfect, but given that there was a point in time that a 6 event season seemed unavoidable, we are very pleased.

You may notice there are a few new things on this year’s schedule. First of all, we have two night events scheduled in July and August at AMS. These will be run in the newly enlarged champions lot under the lights. Many of the details are not yet worked out, and I expect these events to provide some unique challenges. However, I believe these events will become a highly anticipated Atlanta Region tradition. There is also a “Super Regional” weekend scheduled in July that will earn points toward the South East Divisional Solo Series Championship. Additionally, we were able to secure the first weekend of July date for the DoubleX Challenge. I am expecting some major announcements about this event within the next week.

Now that the schedule is set, Team Solo will be able to finish off some of season development and we should be able to finalize the supplemental regulations soon. I hope everyone is ready to get back out and I look forward to seeing you all at Points 1.

I've copied some information from soloatlanta.com (Search their forums) for the event last year. I did not attend, but I think that Brian and Meredith did.

Method: The Driver Development Program is a season long mentoring program, putting participants in the roll of both student and teacher. This process may include everything from hands on driver instruction and course analysis to classroom sessions on topics such as suspension set up and dial in to a look at the psychology of autocross.

Who is the program for?
While there are not hard and fast requirements for participating in the Driver Development Program, other than being an Atlanta Region member, there are some guidelines to keep in mind. Please note, these guidelines pertain more to your goals then to where you are now.

Be aware that success in motorsports cost money. The higher the level you wish to succeed on the more expensive it becomes. Does this mean that you need to write a check right now for a new car, shocks, wheels and tires? No. But participants should be mindful and prepared for the financial commitments involved.

Driver Development Program participants are expected (not required) to enter at least 1 two-day event aside from the Atlanta Divisional during the course of the season and to seriously conceder competing in the Solo Nationals. If your goal is to become a better driver, but you are not interested in competing in divisional and national events then the program is not for you. For drivers in their first year the Novice School is a wonderful resource to get you started. From there the Evolution Performance Driving Schools can help you improve your driving.

There is no minimum level of autocross experience required however; participants should at least be comfortable with autocrossing. If you reasonably new to autocross and you are still attempting to get a handle on the sport, much of the material covered may be outside of your experience.

The first of the Driver Development days will be on April 22nd at Turner Field. The format of the day is as follows:

The morning will feature a National style course. Drivers will walk the course on their own then taking 4 runs each. On each of these runs drivers with passenger seats will be required to carry a passenger. Anyone can ride with anyone, but everyone must have a rider. The idea is that both people in the car will be learning from the other. By riding with one another we can work on mechanics, looking ahead, etc.

After 4 runs each, we will have a classroom course walk, where we will "workshop" the course. This will be an opportunity to talk about what we saw when we walked, how we actually drove, and how we should have driven. Then we will conclude the morning with 2 more runs each (again, with passengers) to try to apply what was learned.

Lunch will be provided on site, during the lunch break a new course will be built.

After lunch the new course will be used for a “Mini National Tour.” Drivers will have an opportunity to walk the course as though it were a tour (in groups, or solo) and then 3 runs each. Then we will reverse direction and do the same thing (walking then driving). The day will finish up with a wrap session to discuss what we have learned and what we need to focus on.

The cost is $50 per driver and the event is capped at 50 drivers. The registration opening date will be announced soon.

If you are not sure if the program is right for you, feel free to send me a private message or post questions within this thread. I do not want anyone to feel left out because they are not involved with the program. The entire point of this program is to improve the competition level within our region. As the veteran drivers share their knowledge through this program there will become more drivers at Points Events ready, willing and able to share that knowledge. This is the first year of what I hope becomes an Atlanta Region tradition. If it is not right for you now, it may be next year.
