I have a feeling that my cold weather whine in the AM is due to the PS Fluid. I know that the recommended PS fluid is the Dexron....

Has anyone flushed their system and replaced with a quality (better than stock) and have good long term results. I prefer stable and quality thats proven - synthetic or otherwise fluids.

    Any recommendations ?

I just use the cheap stuff in my PS system. Its just Dexron II ATF I believe, you could put some synthetic in but its not a part that will tend to overheat or burn through fluid. I'd say just top it off if its whining, the fluid might be a little low before everything warms up.

You could probably just pull the hose from the bottom of the reservoir and drain it that way. But, as stated above, I would just top the fluid off.

Out of curioisty, have you found any other owners experiencing similar simptoms?

the whinning sound is so common but everyone has a differnet answer to a different problem. Some say its the AC belt tensioner pullry, some say its the PS pulley, some even say its the timing belt tensioner. Im at 25k miles and th PS fluid has a tint so i might as well start there.

at 25k i would take it to a dealership since its under warrenty. it could be a faulty powersteering pump and you could have it replaced for free since its covered under warrenty. if you mess with it and change the fluid or anything else and then go to get it looked at, the deler may kick the claim back since you altered it from factory spec. i have changed less than a handfull of powersteering pumps under warrenty and out of warrenty, but it is a possibility.

have you been to the SAAB dealer ? I wont even let them change my oil even i have free Oil changes and all the free stuff for being a SAAB.

just for a sample my door lock beeper went out and i was being cheap to get them to replace it
they almost reset my ECU with Cobb AP(at that time) because i duct tape the port (in case) andthey took out the whole ECU and try to plug some diagnostic cable . Then i asked them if they know where the beeper was for kicks they pointed to the horn next to the turbo while most of the wiring harness was on the floor board. and out of the 5 screws for splash pan i only got 3 front ones back so it rattled for months

Do i still want to use the dealer ??? you tell me

mine does this when its cold in the morning. i know is PS because it only whines when i turn the wheel. it only does it until the engine is completely warmed up. its like the fluid isn't flowing well until its warmed up so the power steering pump puts extra strain on the belt, making it squeel. and my fluid is within tolerance (markings on bottle) anyone use synthetics? maybe i will just add a smidge of synthetic.

i would not add fluids of different kinds (just my pp)
and i would stick with the mfg recommended Dexron III

have you tried tightening the belts to get the squeek to go away

If The Belt Is To Tight It Will Stress The Powersteering Pump Shaft And Can Cause Your Pump To Prematurly Fail, As Per Subaru Technical Support
