i posted this in another thread but this topic is more appropriate i think. has anyone ever put a supercharger into a subaru? or gone even as far as doing a turbo & supercharger onto the same setup. i think i read somewhere that this was done in another car like a ford or something but does anyone know if this is possible what would be the drawbacks?

audi or vw (same company anyways) has this system called biturbo its supercharged and turbocharged.
im not sure if they are going to make it happen i read it in some article in motortrend.
i dont like vw's so i didnt follow up on it.

A guy on the RS boards has is ej25 with a supercharger. He likes the setup a lot. It's on a stock n/a engine with a 10.5:1 compression and 8psi.

that used to be very common in the wrc until it was outlawed. think lancia delta

but for todays standards i don't think its needed. why make something more complex when you can make more with less issues

yeah i agree i wonder why some people do it though...just to see if it is possible or what?

Well on N/A cars its popular because it keeps the n/a feel and provides a lot of performance. You also keep the great drivability and low end torque.

    to show off

and to the link to nasioc...thats exactly a reason to not do it. started thread/project 08/04 and still not done. you cold have easily done a a single big turbo and destroy a twin charged counterpart

someone in western NC did it to their 2000 Impreza. Had a boost spike and murdered a piston.

Its popular in the right setup due to zero lag/instant power and is....less complex than a turbo. However, in the same sense, it is more complex. However, it is WAY less efficient than a turbo.

    Meh.

The guy that did it to his L wagon has had it working for years. He just put in a new twincharge setup. Turbo and super charged.

If you are going for that flatter torque curve, a supercharger seems to do that.

yea, for some reason i tend to think that supercharger evenly distributes the extra power no the powerband, whereas the turbo has this big lump of power coming at a certain point. that's why i think cars with a high strung engine naturally (such as rsx, nsx, ferrari or M3) would be more efficient with a supercharger, keeping the NA feel and have a wide powerband (i think these cars also already have a high-end torque compared to cars like ours, and thus why subaru is the most ideal with the turbo).

but then, what do i know? i just come up with some crazy theory and gut feeling, but have no hands on experience. please feel free to correct me guys!

btw, as a future automobile designer (currently in SCAD industrial design and going to Art Center in Pasadena CA to study transportation design), i think knowing the basic mechanism of a car is a very important aspect and is the best way to learn the distinct characterstic of a certain car (subaru= awd, turbo= balance, sporty, outdoor, versatile, etc)
