So a few times In 5th and sometimes 6th gear, I get on it, and "bam!" the car cuts out on me. I basically have ECUTEK, and TBE. Now I thought with EM I won't, or shouldn't get "boost creep" as they call it? So what's the next step? Port the wastegate? Will that fix the problem? I dunno...I'm a little dissapointed in my car right now. My "20k" SRT...Neon as they call it didn't do this. Sorry, thats my bitchin for the night about my car.lol
check the hoses going to the wastegate actuator. I had a leak there and it was spiking bad in 5th and leading to cut out.
STi's with downpipes and the stock VF39 are prone to boost creep in cold weather... datalog the car and post your results... sometimes this effect can be tuned out but sometimes it needs a mechanical fix (port and polish)
My 04 WRX would have boost spikes after the weather got colder too. I would reset the ECU and it would relearn for the cooler weather. Then all was good and fast.

yeah i already talked to SS, and he's nice enough to offer and load another map in and see if it's better. than if not, eventually when i have the loot...port the wastegate. when is tax season again?lol thanks everyone for the advice...yeah i never thought about resetting ECU. i'll try that too, also look for vacume leaks. i REALLY need to get a boost guage.
What dp are you running? I've heard that the divorced wastegate pipe really helps to prevent the boost creep. When the turbo is pushing so much exhaust gas right next to the wastegate, the pressure difference really makes the wastegate struggle to open up. I could be wrong, but as a chemist it makes sense to me.
The divorce actually makes boost creep MORE likely. The wastegate flapper door doesn't open 90 degrees from closed, it's more like 25 to 30 degrees. So if there is divorce plate there, the wastegate flow is right into it. This hampers the flow out of the wastegate, making creep more likely. The bellmouth's are less prone to creep in my experience. There is the chance that more aggressive intake-air-temp wastegate duty compensation can prevent the cut, but the only thing that guarantees no creep is porting the wastegate... SS
^yeah that is what SS suggested. now i just need to come up with $400 bucks. that parts and labor. will i get any other performance gains out of port and polishing the wastegate? faster spool up, more HP, ect? i'm still unclear on what this is, but i think this is the route i need to go with.
oops...didn't see this post until i already posted. i have a helix catless dp which is a bellmouth of course. so what other gains, if any besides elliviating (spell) boost creep...if any? i guess the ol' STi is goin back to Scott.lol

man i got owned by boost creep again last night...5th and 6th gear.grrrr i was messing with my Father his 928, and "bam" car cuts out on me. I swear it feels like i'm being kicked backwards. $400 bucks for labor/porting...ugh how hard is it anyways to yank the turbo off? apprx hrs?
if i can't mount the turbo back in correctly, and i simply duct tape it back on the manifold? see thats how mechanically inclined i am.
I would think flow in terms of 3 dimensional and not 2 dimensional Personally i thnk the plate there reduces the turbulent flow and the wastegate has a less turbulent area to flow into and more of an independent path. unfortunately the pivot pt of the wastegate is on the other side if i were to design a turbo i would want the pivot point on the opposite side. so that when opening the flow of exhaust does not try to hinder the wastegate flow. Im not sure porting is worth the trouble i think getting the wastegate to open a tad more is easier to achieve. If you did not preload the WG actuator too much then it will open a tad more. How much will ONE pay - to open the wastegate 10-20% more ?

Hmmmm I'm having the same issues. My solution is an old DSM solution (well maybe not DSM but all the big16g owners like me had to do this), get a big whopping wg flapper and port that bad boy.

If you put a more restrictive muffler on (stock, or one like it), it will probably prevent the creep. SS

it would be nice to see a log when boost creep happens and what is the WGDC at that moment and the secs leading up to it (hint)
i also get boost creep, mainly 4th gear when im really pushing it. thats with bellmouth turbo back and manual boost controller. oh, and only when its cold out. my fix is turn boost down
Mine's not that illogical. Putting a stock muffler on it MIGHT cost 2 whp, but will most likely prevent all creep... so he can use WOT in the cold. It takes 20 minutes to change axle-backs and if he's got his stocker it's free... SS
It's only "terminal mechanical boost creep" if wastegate duty is 0% and it still creeps. In my experience (what do I know, I've only tuned 400+ Subaru's) divorced DP's are MORE LIKELY, not guaranteed, and not that belmouth's never do, but MORE LIKELY to cause creep. I've seen terminal mechanical boost creep so bad that you could disconnect the wastegate actuator arm from the wastegate and let the flapper swing freely and it still terminally creeps to 21+ psi... Loosening an adjustable wastegate actuator arm can have hugely detrimental effects on spool. Then again, if you are offering a money back guarantee... (btw, I'll let you in on a little secret, VF-39's don't have adjustable actuator arms like TD04's...) SS

I dont need adjustable arm to open the door wider Using stock wastegate arm and actuator arm so porting will fix it ? blowing thru a trumpet with large mouth(outlet) or a super large mouth (ported) Maybe a secondary safety blow off valve that Ts into the stock BOV line

its a simple solution to a not so complex issue all the design things i do daily is simple soulutions and you actually pay considerably more for simplicity. Simple solutions are easy to debug But if your turbo is like what SS has seen then no device will help (turbo still creeps with WG wide open with wg arm disconnected) The "Ixizanticreep" (gadget) uses simple ratio - it uses your OEM stock everything with a totally return to stock concept. Your WGDC still has to be tuned by your tuner like normal. it will just open a % more than stock but preset by the gadget. At the moment i have an idea to make this preset even adjustable (within range). SS, you refer my products and Ill recommend a tune [by SS] after install and we can call it even Your $ is for machining time and material and for me to have some play money to develop other products. I dont have a VF39 or any other turbo in the garage so if anyone has one in the in garage and let me borrrow it to verify some dimensions. And if this ever become a production item - Ill give you one for FREE. At least you can say you have seen it here FIRST in WRXATLANTA
So Shane, this is another "might work" solution. Sometimes going to an EBCS (if you don't already have one) MIGHT work. The issue is that the wastegate opening is too small. There's a reason that the new STi turbos, the VF-43s have bigger wastegate openings. If this "device" "opens the wastegate more", it will have to be tuned for, or you will be low boost all the time. Boost creep is almost entirely temperature sensitive. A car might not do it at all at 50 degrees F, but it can be absolutely terminal (wastagate arm OFF) at 20 degrees. So opening it "more" might work at 40 degrees, but will it work at 15 degrees? Porting the wastegate is the most proven method, which as far as I know, has near a 100% success rate. SS
My wastegate is ported to the max from Deadbolt. My exhaust is the culprit. I stick a silencer in the Blitz and the creep stops. On my old B&B exhaust it NEVER creeped. That exhast had wierd baffles in the muffler whereas the Blitz is wide open. I'm breathing a lot more so the back pressure is gone. Deadbolt is gonna put a bigger flapper on the car when I get a chance to remove it but I don't have another vehicle to drive until it gets warmer and I can ride the Harley. However if the creep stops when it warms up I may not worry about it at all.
Scott...I definately don't have the money to be the guinea pig, and try something new on my car, and see "what happens." The route I'm definately taking is porting the wg out. My tax return should be here soon so I guess I just have to take the plunge and dump another 400 bucks to resolve this. I know you're a busy dude ss, and I appreciate you sharing your experience/knowledge on this issue.
