i didnt wanna get BOV cuz i hear our cars will end up running rich, thus you get backfire and burn up your bumper.. but will the BOV be beneficial for shifting smoother? (it makes sense since a huge amount of left over power will not go back to the car and throw off the balance). i didnt want one cuz i didnt want to catch police's attention, and it makes me feel like a ricer, but if there is a decent reason behind it, im seriously thinking about doing this.

same thing with turbo timer. i hear that our stock cars do not necessarily need it, but my car isnt exactly stock anymore...

what do you guys think? (my mods are listed on my sig below)

a BOV isnt going to make your car smoother, if anything make it more rough. our cars dont really like fully atmospheric BOVs because our ecu expects the air that is blown off ot the atmosphere back into the intake.

in short, an atmospheric BOV has no reason to be on our cars, when only lightly modded, except for the bling factor and the cool sound.

Simply, you don't really need either. You have to be pushing mucho boost before any kind of BOV is needed, and the stock turbo cools itself quite nicely :)

The best turbo timer is you, and your free. Just let the car idle before running and after running for at least a minute.

yeah, the BOV does the opposite of what u said. it makes shifting rougher. I have a greddy type-s, but my car has been tuned with it on. when i bought the car it had a turboxs rfl on it. i traded for the greddy cuz the rfl was too loud. if i can figure a way to effectively use the recirc feature with my massive top mount then i would....

I can tell you from Personal expereince that a BOV, (Flame suit on) could help with smoothness.

When I bought my first WRX, first on in Harrisburg PA by the way, I had issues with the car shaking violently at idle, and also, when I would let off the gas and push in the clutch, the RPMs would continue to climb maybe about 200 to 400 RPM.

I spent some time reading on the internet, saw how everybody said BOVs are bad. I went to Rallyperformance.com and was reading thru thier site. If you haven't seen thier site, check it out, it is one of the best parts sites for our cars that i have found. Thier customer service is a bit lacking, but that's not the point. They are the only site I have found that gives information about thier product, not the standard, Exhaust - Sounds great discriptions that other sites like to use, but more an in depth description of the product, a little about the legendary sound of a ScoobySport Exhaust, some general hp increase info, and where you will see the increase. Very informative, and alot more detail than any other site gives on thier products.

Anyways, enough rambling. So I am reading their site, and they sell the Forge BOV. They say that it is 100% atmospheric, but more importantly, they made mention of the tendency of the WRX engine to shake violently at idle, and said that this BOV helps eleviate that issue. They also mentioned further down in the paragraph about the tendency for the RPM to continue climbing after releasing the Loud Pedal. The 2 issues I noticed with my car were mentioned on thier site, and they said that the Forge BOV helped fix those issues. I bought the BOV and installed it. It was the ONLY modification I did to my 02 aside from wheels and my Spoiler, and sure enough, the violent shaking and the RPM climbing issues were both much better, not 100% gone, but not nearly as noticible. RPMs still climbed on occasion after lift off, but instead of the 200 to 400 RPM climb, it was more like a 100 to 200 RPM Climb, and it was very rare when that happened. The car still had the shake issue also, but it was not violent and it did not bother me.

I know the arguement of running rich in between shifts, and shooting fireballs thru your exhaust. Running rich, big deal. I have had my Forge 100% atmospheric BOV on my 05 since day 1. 2 and a half years later, my car is still tip top, never had any issues with it.

As for the Fireball thing, for me that is no biggie. I have a catless exhaust, so I am not worried about my Cat burning up. I shoot fireballs, as Milo, and many others on hear can confirm from driving behind me, but I have not melted my rear bumper. I have a heat shield to protect against that, but depending on which exhaust you go with, you might not even need that, it all depends on how high or close to your bumper you exhaust tip sits. Mine has a good bit of space, so even without the heat shield, there is virtually no fear of melting my bumper.

If you have a catted uppipe, do not do a BOV. Go catless on the uppipe at the very least. You don't want to shoot a fireball thru your exhaust with a catted uppipe, all it would take is for a small peice of the cat to come apart and go into you turbo to force a Turbo upgrade early on.

(Flame suit off) I hope I am safe

  8. Bov's are very annoying esp. when others go by and whoosh(psssshh) loudly when you are driving down the road minding your own business.

i could stretch my imagination and believe that it would help with the RPM climb... but i have no idea why it would help at idle

They used to have an explanation on that on the rallyperformance website. I wish I would have taken notes.

I had a BOV and it caused nothing but problems. Not to mention it was annoying on the autox course, LOL. I also have a turbo timer and the only time I let it run is on long trips just for peace of mind. I used it a lot in the Florida summer with my job. I was in and out of my car so often that I would take my keys out so that I could lock my car but I would turn the turbo timer up to the max so that I could keep the A/C on. I have a feeling that I am going to have to use it this summer too. This will be my first summer in Hot-lanta. I also use it when I stop at a jiffy store to get something to drink, or whatever. Getting into a cool or warm car , whatever the season may be, is the greatest! :wavey:
