Hey all. I'm thinking about buying a 2005 WRX wagon and have a question about the drivetrain. I will still have it checked out by a Subaru dealer but wanted to get some opinions too. As I was driving, 40 - 50 mph, and as I pressed the clutch in, a whining noise started. Sounded like it was below me in the middle of the car. I thought it was the clutch, so I took it out of gear and released the clutch. Noise didn't stop. There's also a "clunk" type noise when your in the turbo range and just let off the gas. And also another type of whining noise. It was just hard to pinpoint anything. The seller said that was a complaint about the wagon and the drivetrain. But I don't know.

More about the car. It's on it's 2nd owner with 30,000 miles. It was in a "moderate" front-end impact with the first owner, but no specifics.

Any info or ideas would be great!!!! And any suggestions on where to take the car to get inspected.

    Thanks again!

where does the clunk come from (the one when u release the gas)? if its coming from one of the wheels and occurs when shifting between accel to decel and vice versa, it might be a loose axle nut... if it is, then thats not a big problem since it can be retightened easily

Didn't sound like the wheels. Again sounded underneath the car. But just hard to pinpoint. My friend with me, who has a WRX sedan, thought it might be something with the exhaust. The 2nd owner did have a larger exhaust and then went back to the stock. I don't know if he did the work or had it done or if that would have anything to do with anything.

yo, milo, i drove the car and it sounded like it was coming from the center diff. but i don't for sure as i've never heard one go bad. there was also a whin costing. it came and then went. what are some other issues to be careful of? we know the trani can be abused, what are signs to look for if the car has been driven a little too spiritedly? thanks again folks. just trying to bring another to the subi side of life.

im not sure... have it inspected by a tech (preferable someone with enough subaru experience)... this is beyond my knowledge...

try sending a PM to WJM

possible rear diff failure as well.

sounds like you may want to stay away from that one. Noticed several wagons at sog while I was browsing their site today. Had a really nice red one there.

Really? Damn. Yeah I saw the red one. Just a little more than I can spend. I think I will still have it checked tho.

Oh, something about the steering wheel. When driving straight, it's just a little turned. Car doesn't pull. Just a visual thing. I'm thinking that it's nothing major. Or does this mean something else?

    Thanks again for the replies.

There are plenty of used wagons for sale, avoid this one. If you are getting a "deal", its probably because there is something wrong with this car.

That red one is a little marked up there. Should beable to get that much lower. Heck my stock and clean car isn't even worth 19k.

As for the steering wheel, that probably doesn't mean anything. Mine use to do that, but I think it's been fixed now although I dunno what I did. It can be realigned.
