Unusual CEL Question......

Discussion in 'Modifications & DIY how-to' started by bluelinescooby, Mar 13, 2007.

  1. I have a girlfriend CEL...... almost everytime she takes my car for anything longer than a trip to the store, the check engine light comes on. It's only done it to me once, while steadily cruising at around 40 mph. Aggressive driving doesn't do it, and I'm sure she drives the car more conservitively than I do anyhow......

Now here's the thing..... it started happening after I added a catted TBE and Cobb AP, so I thought maybe it had something to do with that...... but when I try to check the code it says no trouble codes found. It doesn't affect driveability so I'm not too worried about it, but might it be something that can be ironed out with a Protune maybe? Suggestions?

Don't let a woman drive your car!
Last time a woman drove my car, she cracked the paint on my front lip :-(

J/k... you are lucky your gf knows how to drive a manual.

But seriously, is there any aftermarket ecu software that can read and log odbII codes? That would be incredibly cool.

Yeah, I think your car is trying to tell you something.

Did you turn off the downpipe CEL? It will only come on if you sit and cruise at constant speed for a couple minutes.

  6. The only things turned off are what the AP defeats when I installed it...... so it should have but I'm not 100% sure...... the confusion is that it never really happens to me no matter how I drive, but it happens to my gf quite often......

other than the obvious cel reasons for these cars, how good is she with a manual, and would repeated stalling or laboring the engine (maybe the o2
sensor gets fouled?) often throw a cel?

    just thinking aloud here...

  8. She's always driven manuals, that's the only reason I trust her to drive my car :)

I was actually wondering if it might be the 02 sensor, but I figured it would at least give me a code for it...... I'll look around and see if I can find a cheap one somewhere, maybe that'll help......

Why don't you ride with her the next couple of times she takes your car and see if it pops up, that way you can catch it when it happens.

does she know that its a manual and you have to shift out of first gear :keke:

  11. The brakes on her ZX2 suck so she usually only takes it on trips and stuff, every now and then to work...... I guess I'm just making assumptions of her driving habits by how she drives her car.....

She does, and along the lines of gear selection...... I was following her one day while she was driving her car but she'd just taken mine to Savannah. We drive down the road and her reverse lights keep flashing cuz she forgot she doesn't have a 6th gear :)

Anyhow, I guess I'll try a new 02 sensor and see if that works..... if not, maybe it'll go away when I get a tune.....

you've prob tried this already, but have you just taken it to an empty road and redlined every shift? just to blow the shit off the o2? i had a miata that would do that if you didn't drive it hard often enough. course, it had over 200k on it.

  13. ^^^Not with any kind of intent, I'll give that a shot..... :D

I too get a CEL code just cruising on the HWY. All I have changed is a TSUDO catless downpipe and a Blitz nur spec r TBE. Let me know what fixes yours.

  16. Gonna bump this up...... never got around to spending $100+ on a new sensor, so still having the same issue. However, took a roadtrip to Chicago earlier this month and had to clear the CEL once on the way up and once again on the way back..... nothing special, cruise control on the interstate..... and I remembered something...... I put my exhaust on before I got my AP and I wired in a resistor that I had sitting around from another exhaust to prevent the CEL...... might this be the culprit? I'll redo my hack wiring job and give an update to see if I've found a solution to my self-inflicted problem......
