OK, So I have these used rear brakes (wes's old sti ra v6 vented rears) I want to put on my car in a few thousand miles; I am still waiting for ss lines and new pads all around. Since they are used, the rotors and calipers are kinds rusty, these things happen. I would like to clean them up a bit and possibly paint them a nice color to match or complement my regal blue pearl car.

I found this DIY on scoobymods, I'm sure many of you are familiar with it:

As you notice he even paints the contact surface of the rotor! I have heard some people claim that one should clean this surface even in between changing pads to remove residue that might prevent proper pad bedding or something like that.

    First Question:
Sooooooooo, would paint on this very important contact surface be potentially detrimental to brake performance?

    Second Question:
What color should I paint my new brakes? Suggestions? I'm thinking orange, nice and obnoxious!

And is there anything I need to watch out for/not paint on the calipers (besides those little rubber booties)?

    Thanks!

Actually, I vote you just polish them. We did that to 420's before we painted them and I was a big fan of it. Maybe he'll post pics of it :)

    Any other color suggestions?

That looked good. I think it's ok to paint the contact area though I doubt I would have completely covered it. A little overspray would be more like it IMO.

The type of paint is probably the main question. I remember putting some PowerSlots on my Civic back in the day and they had paint on the contact area, which of course came off after the first use.

Sorry, I am a lazy bastard. I will post the pics up tonight. I keep forgetting. Love the painted calipers by the way. I did mine a dark blue. Almost matches the body color, just a little darker.

I got a little overspray on my rotors. Most burned off the first time I drove. Didn't really notice much of an effect from the paint on the rotors. I don't think I would recommend painting the entire thing, but if you get a little overspray on them, no big deal.
