As the title states. I'm looking for an '04-'07 5 speed tranny to put into my '02 WRX. Mainly because I know those MY trannies are a little stronger than my stock '02 i just blew the front differential in. I know they are significantly stronger but any strength is a good temporary fix until i swap out the gears which I will hopefully do in the next year (coupled with an STi block). Anyways, my question is this: what, if anything do I need to make these drop in. SOG will be doing the work, and I would assume that they would know, but i just wanna get a head start and start looking around and making sure I have everything I need so I can get my car back ASAP. Thanks in advance.

04 and 05 will bolt right in. 06-07 will need a few complicated gadgetries. The speed sensor is no longer located inside the tranny with those years.

are the 04-05 trannies really that much stronger than our bugeyes? and if so, why?

not amazingly stronger, but its generally considered to be. The 03's added some sort of pressure release(can't remember exactly what its called), which seemed to help some. Then the 04-05's got wider gears, which I believe are considered to be pretty close to the RA gearset.

yeah, i know its not a huge difference. but like i said its just a temporary advantage until i do some major work within the next year....

The 06-07 center diff is 1:1 where the 02-05 is 1.1:1.

This means that the front and rear diffs are different ratios. ~3.9F/3.6R for the 02-05 and ~3.7 front and rear on the 06-07.

yeah its a complete swap, meaning it will have a new rear diff. and all axels. also supposedly they change to a push type clutch instead of a pull type (or maybe its vice versa), but this setup i'm buying has the new clutch, flywheel and pressure plate as well.

Good time to upgrade things like the mounts n bushings and other performance things. 06 also has better syncros for for 1st and 2nd. They feel nice.

good to hear that you got something that'll work for you.

Maybe now you'll actually be able to drive your car around for more than a month without something else breaking. :)

The 06 trannies are way better. But even they have issues like not going into 1st when moving even with double-clutching especially if the fluid is cold. At least that's been my experience. But it seems like as soon as you warm it up it works a hell of a lot better. I'm going to be upgrading to a synthetic fluid when I do my first change, probably Redline I guess.

I definitely suggest upgrading the mounts because I really get tired of all that movement in the stick. It just doesn't feel like a good quality setup, but of course there are things you live with. Like the movement and the way that loud ass flywheel boldly pronounces every little bit of driveline noise! Lol. :D

Yeah I don't mind the road noise or vibration or harshness. I will eventually upgrade all the mounts and bushings. But for now I'm just happy to get it back.
