Thinking about getting steering rack bushing... but how much? and is it worth it? Hey all, I'm sort of concerned about how slow my car reacts to my steering. I have 03 WRX. I heard only way to fix it is to upgrade the steering rack to a quicker ration Steering rack but i heard that cost a fortune. I also heard that steering rack bushings will also fix that prob to some extent. Is this true? How much would the bushing cost? including labor? Is it worth it?
for around $35, you couldnt find a better mod for the car. personally, it wasnt enough for my satisfaction, but it is still noticeably different. i think you can get them at TIC for the cheapest (i think blindfold got'em for $25 from TIC and i paid $30 for mine at SOG). Also, i would try to get an install day together rather then getting it installed from sog or something and end up paying close to $100+. Ped and kingwrx was an awesome help for me!
what's an install day? I know it is hard to describe the change but ...what does it feel like? how is it different from chanigngt the steering rack ?
Offer free beer, and you will soon find out what an install day is. As for the rack bushings, I've yet to get them, but basically I just hear that it cuts the slop out. There is no longer much hesitation between turning the steering wheel, and the wheels turning.
a little more resistance in steering (stiffer), and a better on-center feel (on the highway you`ll defitinitely feel it). gets rid of memory steer a little bit faster as well.
Do you know much about antilift kits ? are the bushings similar to antilift kits in terms of change in handling?
Best steering mod evAr. $135 installed at SOG...or for just the cost of the bushings, install them yourself. But...having them professionaly installed would be best.
I just put them in my 02 and it made a huge difference in the feel of the steering. Fixed the steering memory problem also. I got mine from turn in concepts for $25 shipped. Looks like they went up to $28. http://turninconcepts10.chainreactionweb.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_9_7_43_55&products_id=47
I got this put in by WJMl ... (he did it in 10min +1 for Will) I can now say this was totally worth it and that it chnaged the feel of the steering COMPLETELY
so if I offer free beer will anyone drive to Columbus for an install day for my uppipe? :hsugh: haha (sorry for the hijack)
Did someone say beer? Odds are your stock SRBs are gummed to hell and back (aka they're worthless). Upgrading them to the stronger aftermarket bushings will improve feedback and response.
it's what I expected. There is no delay between the steering wheel turning and the car actually turning. It's more responsive.
I got the passenger side on, started fighting with the driver side one and ran out of time. anyone got any tips for getting that bracket off?
from what I gather. The most cost/time effective way to put it on is by going to SoG and get Will to put it on in 5 minutes.
lol i know...he's working on my car rite now...good guy. Hands/pocket is very tight right now (he knows) if it wasn't i would have gotten it done by now. Labor alone at Sog hnoes:
We're doing some installs here at my house on June 2nd. You're more than welcome to come out, I would imagine that we'd be able to get the bushings in after we get done with the other installs. PM me if you need directions.
10 mins? I hope you didn't pay 100.00 for 10 min worth of work. That is like $600.00/hr. I put mine in in 10 min...for FREE!
I paid $100. It's still worth it. edit: I skydive. ppl get paid $300 per jump. That doesn't mean they earn $300/min. (you freefall for a min)
I would hardly compare skydiving to automotive work...peoples lives are at stake. Anyway, I am glad you are happy! It is a great mod and money well spent. cheers.
well I finally got paid for about 3 months of work so I think I may finally be able to make the $30 commitment and pick a set of these up .
I have to disagree. Years ago kaufmann tire HAND TIGHTENED all 4 lugnuts on one corner of my bros old accord and he got home to discover only 2 lugnuts left, one which he took off with his hand (the other took about 5 ft/lbs to take off). Luckily it was only a short drive home averaging about 40 mph. We definitely argued to the owner that his life was at stake...
I would hardly compare Kaufmann Tire to SOG either... I think SOG would be offendend by that comparison. friendly...I'M PISSED
I'm offended that you misinterpreted my post as a comparison b/w SOG and Kaufmann... My point is, don't downplay the importance of the work car mechanics do (when compared to 'skydive techs') in saying 'peoples lives are at stake' when referring to skydive work. A (bad) mechanic can forget a bolt/nut or forget to tighten a bolt/nut and cause a catastrophic failure and subsequent accident on I-85 and kill people. I bet tons of people have died from accidents caused by faulty brake/wheel-tire/suspension work. I was actually DEFENDING Will and SOG and the work they do.... Don't say peoples safety isnt an issue because it is. Ok, done!:wiggle:
i did this to my 04 wrx... the easiest way is to wipe the area clean, chalk mark the stock bush locations and then remove both brackes at the same time... install the pita one first (can't remember if it's the R or L side) then the easy side. use lithium grease first and it will slip in easier. i used a razor to just cut out the old ones.
skydiving isn't dangerous :hsnono: i have a higher chance of dying on the way to skydiving then dying while skydiving. this is especially true if I'm in a WRX cuz the speed limit to the dropzone is nonexistant... so the argument is: every thing you do for the first time "seems" hard/dangerous, and it probably it IF you are doing it for the first time. I paid SoG/Will to do it cuz I didn't think I could do it without screwing it up... just like you would pay an instructor to jump with you from the plane on your first jump hnoes: you wouldn't pack your own parachute on your first ..would you? cuz this would probably happen http://youtube.com/watch?v=s7crxihDxmk (although this was totally n00b's falut for pulling a freakin cut-away line instead of deploying the canopy)
