Double DIN Navs w/ Ipod stuff -- Eclipse vs Pioneer

Feel free to talk me out of this, but I am extremely close to dropping the carpc project and going with an actual double din setup. Why? The CarPC will never look as OEM as I want it to without a substantial amount of work. I find myself so busy with lamps that I have little to no desire to work on this project any longer...

So, this thread I am looking for opinions for those in the community who use them on either brand / model. If you have something different and would like to share, by all means, please do so :)

Pioneer AVIC-D3 FTW... I had the AVIC-D1 at one time and loved it.

but the D3 is $999 WITH nav... haha alex, I`ve been looking into getting the D3 also if you`ve seen my past few threads. i`m thinking you`ll be able to get it faster than i can, so let me know when you get it installed.

i`m a total newb at this kind of stuff, but from my research (i`m looking for a screen too), it seems like the pioneer would be better if you listen to music thru ipod. the good thing about the eclipse is that it's got a separate slot from the CD and the DVD (i think that means you dont have to load the map CD all the time to change direction while you listen to your CD). I like the look of the pioneer better (you can change the ambient lighting, etc), and pioneer specifically states that it's got 11-million points of interest (i have not seen a nav that tops this within the $1000 price range).

question* do we still keep the 6-disc CD changing ability or will it be a single CD player when we get these screens?

here's a reply from a guy at nasioc:
Yes, you do lose the 6 disc changer. Also, there are times you will have to switch between the cd you're listening to and the Nav. cd. But adding the iPod cable to the D3 will solve that if you own an iPod.

I picked up an 80GB iPod when I switched out the factory setup. I can carry all 650+ cds that I own with me everywhere now. FTW.

and the pic of his D3:

Only problem with the D3 is that the DVD Nav disc needs to be in when using nav, so no DVD playing while NAV is in use. Probably not a problem for you though Alex. For people with children in the back seat who need to play movies and use NAV on trips, this is a major flaw....

Well, I dont use CDs, I use mp3 aux in...so this is fine. I do like the ambient light part so that it will match the cluster similar to how my clarion does currently.

Prob. just wait for a deal to come up :)

Without any real knowledge of either setup, I can say that I think the eclipse looks much better installed. At least comparing the picture Alex posted and the one Bill did.

I work at CCity and the guys always have this argument between Pioneer and Eclipse.
The thing is Pioneer units usually have more functionality and add-ons (ie: ambient light change, dual slot, more a/v ins and outs, etc) but what I hear is that the Eclipse units have better sound quality and have more Eclipse-branded accessories to upgrade with (Ipod docks, steering wheel mounted controls, even extra screens, etc).

But this is just what I remember from my talks wit the Roadshop crew. They've been pushin me to get a double-din since I got the Scooby...especially after riding in it. Exhaust note>sound system

My friend has a Z and the Eclipse 6.5" screen and I love it! The video quality is awesome and you can switch between "The Chappelle Show" and Nav wit a touch of a button. BUT you can't do that wit CDs. Maybe he has an old one and they fixed this prob, but as far as I know almost all have this problem wit multi-functionality sans constant disc changing

Hope all nonsense I wrote helps :si:

Do either one of these have an AV input for a media player that can output video and audio? I have a Cowon A2 and I can hook it up to TVs and such to output anything on it. That would be awesome so I won't have to burn disks of things and just put it on the Cowon and then output it on this screen.

The Eclipse looks much cleaner. It's also impossible to steal.

Who needs navigation? Get the compass in the rearview mirror and have maps handy. Be a man.

The preout voltage is 1.7 on the pioneer and 5.0 on the eclipse.Might be something to consider if you plan on putting in some amplifiers down the road.

Im getting the D3 myself .. Crutchfield is currently running a deal on this unit and is throwing in a free backup camera.(250.00 value) :)

I paid 700 for mine and got am/fm, cd, dvd, tv, audio/video output, and aux input. i didn't see the point in paying the extra $4-500 more just for the navigation when it would only be used MAYBE once a month...

Well that eclipse has nav and is considerably cheaper. We'll see what happens, got some other things I would like to get first.

I'm running the AVIC-D2 in my truck and absolutely love it. Although it looks like the D3 has it upgrades over the D2, I think the single cd/dvd option sucks. I use my nav daily during the week, and if you have any kind of customer list, the D2/D3 is a no brainer.

I have the d-1 and love iT i THINK THAT pIONEER is the way to go if money is not a question then the D-1's upgrade are definatly worth the extra money( my previous HU was the D-2 and I'm much Hppier now)
