Anyone wanna chime in on any of the brands out there and what to look out for? I'll be putting in a VF39 soon and I wanted to take good care of it so I'm going to get a turbo timer for proper startup and shutdown. I'm just wondering if it matter whether I go with Blitz, HKS, or Apexi. Any input is helpful.
Well I've always heard that they are completely unnecessary on a stock turbo. And since a vf39 is in a sense a stock turbo, it probably holds true. Then again, I am by no means an expert on turbos.
IMO, you really don't need it. The VF39 is oil & water cooled, so no real need for it, unless you want some of the cooler functions of it.
I have the GReddy, I really like it As soon as I can read Japanese and access the cooler functions, I'd be better equipped to answer more questions Even though I don't need it
Completely not necessary at all. You can even get monster turbos with oil and water cooling so IMO you even need one then. Just monitor the oil temperature and if it gets hot then let it cool for a bit before you shut her down. For the TD04 or VF34 or 39 it would be a total waste of time, space and money.
Although not necessary on our cars, they do serve several functions really well. For example, middle of winter and you live in a Shadyish area, Start your car, set the TT, remove the key, exit car, Arm Alarm and go inside until the car is warmed. If anyone gets into your car, when they put the Ebrake down, the car shuts off. Or, you've been driving around and need to run into a Mini Mart to get a drink or pack of ciggs or something. You turn your car off, but you are causing more harm when you come back out 2 minutes later and restarting the car. Starting is the most stressfull thing you do to the car on a daily basis. With the TT, you run in, again, locking the doors or arming the alarm, your car runs for a minute or two, come back at to your car ready to go. I had a Blitz Dual FATT on my 02 and loved it. You can set a base for it to actually turn on. After the car hits a certain RPM, the TT turns on, and starts at say 30 sec. Then for every 5 minutes you drive, it adds 5 sec or so to the time. If you put say 200 miles on in a trip, the TT would run for maybe 5 minutes, but if you only went 10 miles it would run for 30 sec. It also had the logging in it, though I forget what it could show. Wired controller that is small and easy to mount in a good location, and have the radar detector size brain hidden somewhere completely out of sight.
Thanks Jason, the main reason I want to get is because I do do a lot of stopping and starting and I don't want to have to wait in the car for 1-2 mins waiting for the turbo to properly cool down. I didn't know they had other features, that sounds even better.
I take that back then. There are some actual uses for a TT if you're gonna drive like these guys, I.E. make lil stops and stuff.
+1 to 420's argument I feel better knowing that after I drive the car like an asshole so I'm not late to work that my car has time to cool down, since I don't. Plus, it freaks the people in the parking lot out
I have a Blitz and it works for me because I don't really like the look of gauges. It's thin and sleek and blends in to the car which is what I try to do when I mod my car. I mounted it next to the cup holder on my '04 WRX. Horray for the Dremel tool
i got apexi one. i got it cuz it was small and you can fit it anywhere... i put it on top of the dash behind the steering wheel its so small you can put it anywhere youd like. you can program it to set the time automatically but i was laze and just set it at 1:30 all the time.
If you want more lights and buttons in the cockpit I'll sell you an Apexi that I never installed for $40, but I don't think you neeeeeeeed it for turbo longevity.
Which apexi do you have? The one I saw at JSC was really small like the one Bomjoon describes. Is your's a different one?
It's my understanding that your cooling system is designed to circulate water through the engine/turbo after the engine is off. Note the second tank just above the turbo? Somehow that draws water through the engine as parts cool. Anybody know exactly how this works? A TT is great if you're a pizza guy though...
