So I'm going to Alan Cox Auto tomorrow to pick up 4QTs of Royal Purple 5w30, is that enough? Also, what kind of oil filter is best? Subaru brand? Or should I pick up some other brand from them? -Russell
subaru filter (unless k&n make a kick ass version, idk) and don't forget the crush washer. i ran RP in my 04 wrx and loved it... until i found that i was consuming oil, then 7-8$/qt didn't sound so hot. although i'm impressed that the sti has yet to burn anything.
I used Purolator filters. They make the Subaru filters for Subaru(at least they used too). Then I bought crush washers 6-12 at a time. My first WRX was on a diet of Mobil 1 10w-30 and the 06 I used regular Penzoil 5w-30.
4qts is not enough dont need crushwasher if you get a fumoto valve I use WIX filter or purolator plus
Yea I have Mobil 1 synth 5w30 now. I will get the crushwasher since I don't know where I can get a fumoto valve in the next 2-3 days. I plan on changing my oil at Ped's while I put my turbo on.
4.8qt is what you need of oil. Royal Purple is a waste of money. You should definitely read through your owners manual if you still have it. It tells you all of the maintenance mileage and fluids needed. Thats how I keep up with the tune-ups. I also keep a tiny notebook in my glovebox so I know what mileage I did things.
some guy put regular engine oil instead of a synthetic... i`m worried, but he told me it's fine? what do you guys think?
I am sorry but I am lost on the crushwasher term and the whatever valve. Would someone mind explaining those. Not to be a total newb, but yeah.... Thanks...
non synthetic oil won't hurt your engine. it comes from the factory with non synthetic. the crush washer is just a washer that goes on under the drain bolt when you put it back on. the fumoto drain valve replaces the drain plug and lets you drain the oil with the flick of a switch, so to speak. http://www.fumotovalve.com/about.cfm
Mobile 1 sucks according to used oil analysis on Iwsti.com, their oil shear rating is low and additives wear out quickly Castrol Synthetic 0w-30 European Formula is what I use, it is actually a tinny bit thicker than your average 10w-30, and burns less than Mobile 1
^^ me too. exactly the same issue with burning Mobil1. you will need 5 qts., not 4. Make sure to get the crush washer and a genuine Subaru filter
Mobil 1 5w30 synth and a Fram oil filter have been what I've used for the past 30k miles. Can pick up both at any advanced auto parts, autozone, or pep boys. It seems to get the job done. And yeah, like others said, you'll need 5 quarts.
mobil1 has changed their formula and no longer a true synthetic. M1 many years a go brought castrol to court for saying synthetic when theirs were not. And guess what today M1 is no longer true synthetic and they refuse to admit it even after numerous oil gurus have shown it Research about FRAM (who ever uses it) you will find that its not a recommended option. The dollar you save can kill your engine
An oil filter will kill your engine? I mean they are all around the same price, I just always chose it because of the easy grip thing. I can't imagine the difference between oil filters is great enough for one to cause harm. There is lots of hear-say floating around this thread right now (not trying to single out you goixiz). I need links . I'm not stuck in my ways, if I'm screwing my car up I'll change. I'm just a skeptic by nature.
So then what's the verdict on the correct oil choice? I need to change mine soon, so I am willing to go with something new.
European Blend Castrol 0W-30. I think you can only get it from Autozone. Advanced/Napa don't carry it. I say that based on the oil analysis's from the guys on iwsti.
why don't you guys say anything good about Royal Purple? I didn't make it out there this morning so I'm thinking a quick trip to Cox to get it during lunch. Also, I'm gonna pick up the filter and whatever at Cox Auto also cause I went up to Classic yesterday and their parts dept was closed and I don't feel like making another trip.
A guy I know put up a webpage a while back that I can't find now.. he dissected a variety of oil filters, measuring the area, thickness etc of the filter materials, and arrived at the conclusion that the best filter was the Subaru OEM one.
Redline Synthetic, I run straight 50wt but I would recommend you run 30wt unless you do track days in which 40 wt is okay. Matt
Well alrighty then, no more fram for me . Haha, appreciate it. Edit: Actually after further thought, I think I use the tough guard one, which is on the ok list. Even so, I'm still probably going to switch it up next time.
Just came back from Alan Cox and bought 6qt of Royal Purple at $7.51/qt. The drive there was pretty long. Someone said on another thread "it's a little north of the big chicken"...if a little means like 3miles or so. It's pretty far north of Big Chicken. Now I need to get a damn oil filter. Maybe I'll get up early tomorrow morning and head to classic Subaru again.
I have always use the k&n oil filter with the drain back plug o the oil does not run back down and have not had any problems. It cost a bit more but havng oil closer on start up sounded really good. Any thoughts???
Yup, WRXKING is buying some and delivering them to Ped's place for me. Gotta love the hook up! Thanks man! I'll get you a chipotle burrito.
Haha, since when has that mentality been used for anything? Everyone and their mom seems to think that different oil, air filters, brake pads, batteries, and wiper blades all improve your car. Why would it be any different for an oil filter? I don't buy it at all, especially coming from someone as mod-tacular as yourself
I think you guys over analyze everything... 9000 track miles on Mobil One I assure you Mobil One works fine for youre daily driver. That being said, I really like the 50wt Redline. As far as oil filters go Wix is it, or Napa Gold which is made by wix. Matt
ok, maybe it's just me but why pay 45 bucks just for oil? Now I understand synthetic is often considered to be better in the long run (probably questionable). Some how I kind of doubt most here will keep their car long enough to see any added benefit. I sure as hell won't keep my car forever. Last time I got an oil change at SOG for under 30 bucks. Granted it was dino oil, but if your going to change it every 3k miles might as well not stress the wallet to much.
I dont change my oil at 3000miles and i pay less than $30 for oil change with synthetic and a good filter and my oil cap is always back on the car and all the underpan bolts are intact and no cross thread and never under or overfill and the list goes on..... If you change oil at 3k miles you are wasting it and $ I let the oil analysis tell me what my OCI is approx so the extra couple dollars per qt is worth it for synthetic As for M1 i dont care for it. why pay extra for less results
Well I'm still confused then. From what I've picked up, the only thing people are reccomending over M1 is the european blend castrol, but that costs more.
I would use PP Pennzoil platinum 5-40 over M1 (personal choice) I think advance auto has buy 1 get 1 free I got 4 cases of GC for $4+/qt when on sale (couple weeks ago) and if you get a AZ card for every $20 you get like $2 towards freq buyer (thats 10%). Purolator pure one is on sale all the time.
