Is it a good thing that during acceleration from 1st, well when I shift to 2nd, my front driver tire will burp a little? Its not much and diff not for long, just a hit of tire spin. Stock my02 tranny with a center diff on its way out the side of the case. 02 wrx. William...
Both, when I stand on it and run up to about 55 or 6 rounds it does this. I didn't know, I think this car is 50/50 front to rear, right? I didn't think just one tire spinning is good or what. ~Lost~hnoes: -William...
i've never had this what does the tread look like on that tire as opposed to the other front? tire pressure differences too?
I never had a single wheel churp like that with my 03 WRX. Sounds very strange as if there is a problem with your diff.
I've been able to chirp my tires before, but it's deifnitely not something that happens regularly. And I'm pretty sure the few times it has happened, it's been more than one. Sorry...no help here.
when you severly unload the inside front wheel during cornering, sometimes on exit wheel spin in normal on that wheel...but in a straight line thats BAD. You must be driving it really hard. If so, you are on the way to needing a new gear soon.
Well, on that note with the gears. I'm working on getting a new case with R/A gears in it soon,:wiggle: . I hope in the next few weeks actually. About the diff, I've taken my car to SOG before and had them look it. And if any here work there, its the 02 silver WRX. Will and Johnathon both said the center diff is going out in it, I'm in the process of trying to get a hold of a case with STI R/A gears. And I hear the final drive sucks but with better gears it should last right?? Not real sure on the final drive gear, and I've heard and read about the stepper gear(s), not sure on that ether and would appreciate any info on both. How they work, and how hard they are to change and upgrade. Thanks for any help on those topics there!! -William...
Will@SOG=Me. I would highly reccomend changing the front and rear final drive. If you can find a 2.5 RS (1999~2001) transmission and rear diff, that would be a start. You can take the front ring and pinion and use in the WRX box, and with the rear, if its a 99 diff, swap the VLSD from the WRX to the RS diff. If 2000~2001, it will already have the VLSD diff. From there, with the RA gears, you will nearly have an unkillable (within reason) gearset. In the near future I'll be taking an RS transmission and installing the Legacy GT 1st and 2nd, 06 WRX 3rd and 4th, with the Legacy GT 5th...and keeping the 4.11 final drive from the RS. That and with the car weighing in at 2600 lbs, I should not beable to kill any gears, especially with only 350hp/380tq to the ground. However, side stepping the clutch and doing other dumb things like flat shifting would kill anything short of a 6MT or PPG gearset.
Ok, so lets see if I got this right then. The final drive is not a gear in box but in the diff(s) that tells the wheels how fast or slow to go. And after looking and reading, the final drive plays a part on all gears, 1st through 5th, or through 6th. And the higher the better? I did want to ask another question, in the SOG parts department, they have a kartboy short shifter for sale. My question is this, how much shorter is that shifter or any other (from stoke) in inches or centimeters or whatever, also, what else will help shifting in and out of gears? Like, I understand about the shorter the distance the better, all good, but is there anything else that will make it smoother and easier to get that gear and run with it. -William...
good fluid. You need the SUBARU Extra-S to make the syncros work correctly. The front final drive is IN the transmission as the front diff is IN the transmission, at the FRONT of it. The rear diff is obvious...its in the back. What enables the front and rear to be different are the transfer gears in the extension housing...when the input goes to the center diff, the front comes out at a 1:1 ratio, no speed changes. But, for the rear output, the gears are at a 1.1:1 ratio...making the output speed SLOWER thus requiring a taller rear ratio to equalize the speed. 3.700 results in higher top speed and 'longer' gearing. Ideal for road course or drag racing. 4.444 results in a MUCH LOWER top speed and 'shorter' gearing...ideal for rally or autox use. 4.111 is in the middle...the RS gearing is ok, but could be longer..as in the GEARS could be taller, but the final drive stay the same. Everything works together...the actual gear ratios for 1st-5th play a big role, but also the final drive plays a big role. If you do really good on one but not the other, it sucks. If you do the math right, for the power you have, the power band that you have, and how fast you want to go...and you get both the gear ratios correct...it will be what you want.
This looks good but I don't think I will be able to afford the money it takes to drive??? How much of a diff will it make with the gas tank???hnoes: Looking at the chart at the bottom of that page, and is this a good tranny? I mean the gears in it, how are they in everyday use? -William...
Hey Will, where is a good but cheap place to find a final drive for my car?? Any place that comes to mind would help out big time!! -William...
not really...you'd ahve to buy a complete trans and swap it, or buy new from subaru. no cheap solution.
I'm looking at getting this tranny, 4.11 normal close ratio version 1/2 JDM gc8 5mt gearboxe rear Sti LSD's with mechanical lsd and proper axels - not crappy VLSD like stock usdm wrx a brand new Exedy oem complete clutch kit What you'll think, its really this or the sti R/A gears and the same final drive setup??? Well everything inside my case. -William...
This is a little more on the tranny that I'm looking at. JDM Impreza WRX RA MY94 TY752VB3DA 3.454 2.333 1.750 1.354 0.972 3.416 1.000 4.111 Viscous (4kgf) Open Double-cone 2nd synchro added (all turbo Impreza) I hope this means something to you'll!! -William...
Yeah, I got everything I need to do the swap. Should get him the money tomorrow and have everything hopefully by mid next week. I also called SOG and they are puting everything in, and I'm going to get SS to go ahead and tune the car. So, hopefully by week after next, I should have everything done to the car, and be ready to eat the evo's up round here!!! -William... p.s. getting new tires on her too :wiggle: BFG sport g~force
Which one are you going to be running? -William... What kinda 0~60 time can I expect from that 4 11 gear and the close ratio drivetrain?
I'm going from this tranny:1st - 3.545 2nd - 2.111 3rd - 1.448 4th - 1.088 5th - .780 Final Drive: 4.111 To this: 1st - 3.166 2nd - 1.882 3rd - 1.296 4th - 0.972 5th - .738 Final Drive: 4.111 Essentially every single gear is now longer. It'll also have a front helical lsd. It's going to be amazing. New clutch, lightweight flywheel, tranny bushings, groupN tranny mount, new braided clutch line, groupN pitch mount, and new sensors. Side note I will now have much better gas mileage in the city and highway. YAY!
You'll have to take it to a dragstrip to see what you get for 0-60. No idea what you'll get. My car is non-turbo and I also redline 1,000 rpms less.
Ok, I got new tires on the other day. I've been having problems with the valve stems breaking and losing air so I opted for the shinny metal or whatever type stems instead, much better look!!!! They guys that did the work said it was good to go, two days later I got a funny noise coming out of the driver front end, only to take the tire off myself to find something inside the tire making the noise, I know, I was pissed!!! Anyway, I took it back up there and they got the noise to stop, it was the look nut on the back side on the stem, it came off some how. I bring that point up to make another, I know I've been saying it feels like the tranny is on its way out the door and all, but after getting the car back from there. On decel, the car seems to be popping sorta, and its not really so much a noise as its a feeling in the foot feed, this is something I feel more than anything, around 30 mph, in 3rd and 4th. Could this be from the tire, or from the tranny??? Thanks -William...
Where are you feeling the feedback in the foot? One of the pedals, which one if so? Popping as in the car is coming out of gear? Like when you shift and the stick pops into neutral? Its most likely not that tires as they would be consistent in noise making and would only increase as you speed up or decrease as you slow down. Are you going to the same people to mount your tires all the time? If no, then its probably a problem with your wheels with the valve stem mishaps.
Its popping in gear, in 3rd and 4th, but its not like I hear it so much as I feel it in the gas pedal. Hope that helps. But I didn't notice it today, thats what gets me sometimes with this car, some days its fine, and others others its not fine. Like with the turbo, some days it fine, I feel the boost great, and others it like its not as much, not in the way its not boostin but its not as powerful. -William...
Its hard to tell from what you describe. Those gears are normally really strong even in older WRX's. Its the 2nd, 1st, and R that normally cause the most trouble. It could be clutch slippage, but normally that doesn't have a pop to it, more of sssssuuuunnnnkkkk. The turbo issue could be a range of issues also. I know my power starts to suck when it gets hot, so it could be a function of the weather. The fact that you feel it in the gas pedal, could make it related to the engine. I would just take it somewhere to be diagnosed and then just work on the problems yourself.
Yeah, I get my tranny next week and having SOG put it all in. I'm just worrying about it getting worse and something else happening. But if all goes well they will have it for the chance to figure it out. -William...
Ok, now its diff coming for the lower gears. I took it out for a quite ride today and its diff something wrong with something. Just that I have no idea what it is, I would really like to put this off on the tranny being (not working properly) conclusion. That feeling is coming from the floor board and the gas pedal also, not just the foot feed, my mistake.... When driving the car its fine, as long as I'm climbing in speed, but on decel, it start to act up again. This is getting worse day by day. Has anyone taken all the boarding and carpet out of there trunk and been left with some kind of clicking or ticking noise? I took that stuff out over the weekend and I have a tire (no rim yet) two tool bags full of misc. wrenches ext. and a blow up bed for the party nights. I swear it sounds like something is hitting something in there and making some kind of noise. I could see it being possible with everything in there, but wasn't sure if this is common or what. -William...
If you are feeling popping and vibrations on decel and you are using your engine to slow you down, it could be that you have a broken tranny mount and/or engine mount. If you are using the brakes to slow you down then I have no clue.
Yeah, me ether. Its really getting the best of me, today on the drive home it was coming from what sounded like the back of the car. And there is still a ticking or rattling noise coming from under the car somewhere, I hear it when I run over pot holes and such (10~15) mph. At the same time there is that popping noise coming from the back of the car, this also sounds like rubbing, (I'll check the top mounts on the struts this weekend also. I'm taking the wheels off this weekend and finding out what it is, and if nothing comes of it, then SOG will have a shoot at it next week when they install my tranny. -William...
Hey you want to purchase a lightweight flywheel to go with that swap? $125. It's the 14lb flywheel from act.
I have read on the light weight flywheel and have seen several people have more problems with thoes things than I want to get in to. Can you confirm that this kinda of thing won't happen, things like more popping on decel and trowing the drive line out of balance. Thanks -William...
I have both a lightened crank pulley and a lightweight flywheel in the vehicle. No cel's and no issues. Usually the problem comes when you're using tooooo light of a flywheel. What kind of problems are you hearing?
Interesting. Newly refinished? What mods do you have? Are you sure its not just your exhaust backfiring under engine braking?
the problems i know of on the car as followed, and will be looked over when i do get up to SOG. i have a ignition problem in one of the wires, i think pass side rear cylinder. something making a faint ticking sound coming from the back of the car, i think that could be end links, i read that some where. and theres a popping on decel, but i think thats coming from unburnt fuel in the exhaust which could be b/c of the wire missing a little. and as far as the popping in the foot feed, that stoped for some reason. havent noticed it in the last few days. -William...
