Finally took the GC to the track

the swapped GC finally saw its first track event. since it was my first time i entered as beginner. quickly found out that the GC is a good bit faster than most A4s, S4s, RS4s, and VW GTIs. there was one blue S4 that i could stay right on the rear bumper of throughout the front half of the track, but the last corner before the big back straight he had a better line every time and it would take the whole back straight to catch back up. i was hitting around 160mph on that back straight.....had to check with a few of the audi guys since there speedometer goes that high (my needle was buried at 6 o'clock after shifting into 5th). the GC handled amazingly. just wish i could have pushed myself a little further since i knew the suspension could handle it, but the CEL would start flashing, only on the back straight for some reason and it only lasted for a few seconds. so i never hit full throttle and was shifting around 6500rpms. so time for a retune so i can shift at around 7800rpms and hopefully solve whatever was making the CEL freak out. i now know how bad i need a set of harnesses and atleast a 5point cage. well as for updates thats it for now. sard 800cc injectors/sard FPR/sard fuel setting meter will be installed soon plus a retune for better trackability. well heres a vid: sorry about the poor footage.....another reason for a cage-in car footage! next time.

What EJ20 do you have in your car that will rev that high?

160mph!!! You must be running strong (& light). I've only hit 145mph myself. Congrats on whats sounds like a great running.

thanks. save up for one-you will never regret it. worth every penny. dont even worry about power, just brakes and tires. there was a stock 06 STi with an exhaust that was killin it. my instructor drove a 1975 Porshe Carrera that was completely stock and he was seriously fast. good driver makes more difference than any part......although super grippy tires do help.

1999 Ver6 STi TypeRA EJ207 + Ver6 STi Type RA drivetrain....4.444 FD. 1st gear is basically pointless and 2nd is only for pulling out of the pits. think my boost may have been spiking a bit under heavy throttle. the IHI VF23 was smacking 1.3bar regularly.

no rear seat. no rear plastic panels. no trunk panels. only 1/4 tank of gas left when i hit around 160mph. complete Ver6 STi drivetrain out to the hubs and rotors. rays lightwieght lugs....doubt they helped much at all, but horrifingly light anyway.

just need to either fab a camera mount, get a professional suction cup mount (have a sticky pod mount, but it shakes a lot and has fallen off on me before...thank god it was inside), or go nuts and get a nice cage and a rollbar mount. one way or another i will get in-car next time.

I've got a similar ver5 4.44 tranny and I'll agree 1st gear is useless, 2nd is pretty short too when you have to shift before 7K. I always thought that this tranny needed an engine with a higher redline paired to it, you've got my ideal setup right there!.

with that in mind, and also with a tire size of 225/45/17 the MAX speed at 8000rpm is 162.11mph.

So I'd officially like to say your speedo is off. There is NO way you could be going that fast, I'm sorry its just not physically possible. It would be cool though, and you do have a nice car, but i guess all suby's suffer the same speedo problems :(

Does your speedo go past 120mph?

oh yeah. also some nice stainless pieces :naughty:

my speedo doesnt go past 180.......kilometers an hour, which is only 112mph. after talking with a few of the other guys out on the track in my group, a few of them stated they were topping out around 150/160mph before the drop on the back straight. good chance i was coming up shy on the 160 area, but extremely probable i was catching 150+.

    for next track day:
    cage with rollbar camera mount
friends with radar guns willing to hang out on the straights
    wider rims and tires

Wow, RA looks like an awesome track. I'm in next time there is an opening :)
    Any concerns for brakes overheating?

So, when is this becoming your non-DD. With a cage I'd hope you dont drive it daily on the streets.

nah. just a 5pointer to start. woul like to run something like 245/45 or 245/40 for rubber. just need to find a set of 17x8s or 17x8.5s.

if you are planning on running stock or one up pads....yes they will overheat and fade like crazy at RoadAtlanta. took a full set of Hawk HP plus pads down a NC mountain pass, the pads were smoking and not braking for crap before i reached the base. i never got over 70mph. so i went with CarboTech circuit pads for the front. there was only one time where i felt a little fade, then it instantly was gone. pads had massive bite all day long.

my first cage will only be a 5pointer. that way i still have the safe DD aspect, just no rear passengers. eventually the GC wont ever see public streets again.....except from a trailer. pretty sure that day is still many years away.

Any recommendations for an 07 sti? Air ducts for the brakes?

i am running the JDM Ver6 STi 4pot/2pot brakes. no stainless lines yet and no brake ducts....yet.

i really really like the CarboTech XP-12s and highly recommend them for track use. of course i have only run them at one track event...and it was my first time running an event or circuit pads. brake ducts couldnt hurt. just make sure they are well attached. things tend come loose pretty easily. i almost lost part of my sideskirt.

Just use the fog light holes for brake ducting. Higher end carbotech pads are you best bet as well.

do they put you in a car or do they let you drive yours?

You use your car for the track days. You can go for a ride (3 laps for $75) in a Panoz car. They also have driving schools with the Panoz cars, but they are $$$. Just go to panozracingschool.com for more details. Here's my post from Sunday.
