ok, first off, sorry for posting another thread so fast, but this is another thing all together. ok, for starters and to get everyone here up to speed with my car, its pretty much a stoke 02 wrx. i just got my tranny put in and got all the kinks worked out of it, i think. im having it tuned next fri, compliments of S.S., and hope to have a good running car afterwards. the tranny i went with is a R/A gear box with 4:11 final drives. i have been pretty soft on the car for a couple of days to make sure everything sounded and ran right, i even drove it to fl. for the weekend. with the gears, the car ran at 75 mph at 3500 rpm's, the whole way, 4 hours, i know. today i was really driving it, running through the gears and really tippin the red line in everyone. i finally decided to try doing a launch and see how the car did off the line, so i dumped it at (around) 3000 rpm's, the car spun a little, maybe 7 or so feet, afterwards, the car made a whining noise on decel, with the motor slowing the car down in first gear. its only in 1st, and only when the motor is slowing the car down, and as far as i know, this just started. and no one drives my car. i would like to think the gear box could take that kinda treatment, i mean, its a R/A gearbox, with 4:11 finals. but i am here asking you for any thing that you can think of. thanks for any help. -William...
i dont think so, its the R/A set. thats about all i know. i would hope so, i heard great things about the straight cut gears, they are supposed to be unbreakable, with in reason. buts it is only 1st gear.
You shouldn't dump the clutch period. R\A Gearsets are not strong, they are only slightly stronger than stock. This is one of the things Siegel and I disagree on. I would never recommend them to anyone for any reason. Matt
does anyone else know anything about the winding. I really have little experience with different trannies, I was just guessing. Hopefully he gets now that you shouldn't dump your clutch, still doesn't really answer his question.
I would agree with you on your opinion Matt. The R/A's and the upper 03 - 05 trannies are virtually the same. They are the same width and all. Just the early batch of the R/A's are cryo treated which in my opinion is beneficial but in no way makes the gears that much stronger to make it worth the money.
have you had a new clutch put in recently, and did you replace the throwout bearing and pilot bearing?
yes, just put it on about a month ago now, i did that when i put the new tranny in. well keep in mind that i say new, its really used but new to me. :wiggle: :wiggle: the car still dives fine, its just got that noise in first gear, thats about the size of it right there. but thur S.O.G. will have it in there parking lot, and hopfully look at it for me on fri if they have time, that is after S.S. does his thing with it. -William...
You cracked some teeth on the driven gear most likely....or you started the decay of the 1st gear teeth on the mainshaft. How do i know? Ashley25 broke two teeth off the mainshaft for 2nd...it was making noises about 2 months before two teeth finally had enough. it still makes noise as I am sure that the driven 2nd gear is tired as well. FAQ for WRX/STi 5MT gears: Q: Can i drive a 5MT like its a race car? A: If you have a turbo, NO. They will always break at some point. Only PPG straight cut gears do not break when driven like a racecar. Q: Can i dump the clutch with my new cryo/polished/JDM RA gears? A: Sure...if you want to break them. Q: I heard that stock gears are junk and the RA's are invincible, is that true? A: No. The stock gears from late 03 and up are the same strength as the RA's. Q: If I break a gear, will SOA warranty it? A: No. It is clearly abuse. You will be denied. Q: What are the benefits of having RA gears? A: Usually more gear noise as the ratios are designed for off road use only, aka Group N. Otherwise, they are more suited for rally use, hince the shorter gearing. Q: Why should I install RA gears? A: Do your research. RA's are not for everyone. Q: What is 'PPG'? A: The best aftermarket gear maker EVER. Q: Why is that? A: Seeing as how there is only ONE gear breakage that I know of (and all of NASIOC)...I'd say thats better than 11ty billion stock and RA breakages.
you dumped it at 3k? While thats not a good idea I am suprised it actually didn't stall. You sure it wasn't a little higher? My stock 02 tranny took a lot more abuse than that and its still running strong.
Phil at Element. That particular transmission was about 2 years old (IIRC from a thread about PPG vs RA gears in which andrewtech got involved) and had been scoobnutted, drag raced, road coursed, dumped dumped, triple dumped and more before it finally broke. thats alot. it got to see some SERIOUS abuse.
Yep Phil beat the piss out of that transmission. He would come off the clutch so hard that it swung the rear end out. Then it was determined that it was a install flaw that made it give. The teeth on the gear where fine only except the outer edge was worn where it was apparent that the gear in question wasn't quite seated right. That speaks tons about the PPG's.
well that sucks, but for the money i cant complain. it was a good deal, but you have it at the shop now, so please let me know of anything you can think of that would help out in anyway. will it drive good for a while? b/c i ran out of money, well with the fix on the master cylender you are doing right now. im broke again, so can i driev the car around ok? thanks again will for all the help. -William...
it drives good now. The noise it makes under decell in 1st and downshifting into 1st...sounds like a cracked gear/cracked teeth. Otherwise, everything else relating to the trans is fine. Its just a matter of time until it does break.
hey will, did you happen to notice anything sounding or feeling like a skip in the motor? i think i may have a bad wire, but i didnt know if you felt it to.
i hate to keep bothering you but i think i may have asked you before, if so, please excuse me. but did you notice the movement between where 1st and 2nd~ 3rd and 4th are at? i checked it out the other week and came to the point that i thought thats it the shaft going into the tranny rear end, i didnt know if you took a look at it. i think you said it might be a shifter bushing. -William...
