umm yeah so i have been a member for likea year and a half and I swear to god that i am like the only one on here that does not own a subaru. So help me out and tell me what you think. I can't decide what to get. I am torn between the wrx tr and just building it myself or the sti and just biting the bullet. Just thought that i would ask and see what the board came up with.
    thanks

get the STi and resist the urge to mod right away. its just a better platform to start out with,

yes i totally agree with them, besides the wrx tranny is good only til 300whp or so*it depends on how you take care of it* while the sti 6-speed is from what i've heard 500whp correct me if im wrong
    hmm what else
    hids
    its an sti
    dccd
    brembos
    ohyea its an sti
    and much more

    but 6-speeds are annoying...

But yeah, i'd say you probably want to go for the STi. Even though with the new wrx you start with a 2.5, the STi is still just a better platform.

My friend had a 1970 mgb. That was an interesting little car, about the complete opposite of a Subaru!

I could go either way, like I said put a little Pros/Cons list together.... a TR done right would be sweet, then again STi are very nice, my thoughts....seems like everyone and there mother have an STi....not many people have a TR done right....who knows

Insurance is another thing to think about. While I will agree the STI rocks, the main decider for me was car insurance prices, and I'm 27 with a squeaky clean driving record.

Yeah good point there. I forgot about that aspect.

Or you can buy a nice used wrx from someone on the board that has already put in the money for some mods and you don't have to pay the extra money for an STi!

What are you planning on doing with the car???
That should help answer lots of questions.

Yeah punk, you need to get with the times. If Miami Mike can get back into a Suby, there is no reason you can't join the family too. Just don't sell the MG or Bike.

    Finally converting :D

If you want to go real big on performance, then I would recommend the STi.

Gimme a call this weekend and we could talk.

Just go for an STI from the get-go to save yourself some money and heartache. The 02-05 platform is great for moderate applications but if you're wanting more than 300whp just get the STI.

I wanted an STI but settled with the WRX because I was driving so damn much.

Here are the reasons I chose the WRX over the STI for my situation, maybe they will help in your choice:

    PRO WRX:
    -cheaper car
    -cheaper insurance
-better gas mileage (I can only assume)
-black interior vs. flashy blue (no limited STI at the time)
-no wing from the showroom (no limited STI at the time, even though it has a baby spoiler, which I like)
-cheaper wear items and maintenance (I can only assume)

My current commute is 25 miles one way, mostly highway. I put almost 40k on my car (bought new) in one year from work-related driving. I just didnt have the heart to stack up highway miles on an STI and bring the value down. Sometimes I have to pack up the trunk and back seat with surgical implants and instruments...I'd feel bad using an STI as a cargo hauler.

My situation has changed now and I drive much less, and my commute will change soon from 50 miles round trip to 4 miles. Also I very rarely have to haul product anymore. If I were in the market for a subaru now, I'd probably get the STI.

I agree with pED though, its all about what you plan to do with the car. If you are a mod/performance nut and know that you'll be looking for a turbo swap, expensive suspension, etc. and what not for a WRX, might as well get the STI if you can afford it...much better starting platform. I am at the point where ive dropped a few grand in my car and wondering if I should do anything else (point of diminishing returns). I'd hate to tally up the money Ive spent and come to find that I could afford a STI with the cost of the WRX + all the mods (not at that point yet, thankfully).

    Hope this helps.

Insurance for me is less for the STi as they are statistically crashed less often. Mine went down from my '03 WRX to my '05 STi.

There is a SICK TR on NASIOC right now. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1282632
That thing has freakin' PPG gears, which kills the biggest drawback to a WRX.
I don't know what he wants for it, but if you're looking at cars it's worth asking.

    wow....that is awesome news.

Who is your insurance provider? I wonder if progressive would feel the same way

Have you test driven either of them yet? I'd say go test drive a TR and see if it that is enough right now for you, otherwise, test drive a STi and see what you think :)

    best of luck!

I had quotes from progressive, travelers, state farm, alfa, and one other I can't remember. They were all a little less for me. But that's with my record, credit score, discounts,... yours could be different, but don't just assume without a quote.

^ what ped said. +1 for insurance, do your homework.

i can tell you this, i bought an 04 wrx new, got it to stage3 with coilovers and bars set up for street and road course. spent time on the road course, and really enjoyed the car but ultimately wanted to get more reliable power and ultimately traded the wrx for the sti.

i couldn't be happier with the sti as a whole package. there are a lot of differences between the two and you really do need to drive both at or close to their limit to really get a handle on what those differences are and how they affect what can be done.
