Ok guys.. 1st off, I took out my TD06 20G and sent it off to have it P&P'd all around, and get fresh internals.. so during that time, I had a VF39 sitting around and decided to have it modded with Blouch's 20G special (it's on their site as an upgrade for any VF series turbo), to get me by until the other was finished. What they did was really open up and polish the turbine housing, wastegate port, and compressor inlet/housing (still 2.4" tho) and install a 20G compressor wheel. The build quality is good, but what seems to be happening is although there are similar power numbers to my previous setup, there is a major boost restriction because of the smaller VF39 housing. The 20G wheel just can't move enough air through the small compressor to make any more than 19 psi and about 40-41 lbs. per minute. There is also significant lag, similar to that of a 20G, even with the smaller turbine. Top end is much inproved, but it's no TD06. This turbo is still good for 320whp on a very good tune, but I can't recommend having this done as a good turbo upgrade. You'd be better in the long run buying a larger turbo. My .02, but SS can back me up on this. Now if you were to use a smaller wheel, spool time may be better, but you're still going to run into problems with airflow restriction. To make a long story semi short, I am disappointed. I knew there would be some restriction and lag, but not like this. :wtc: Feel free to comment, but it might take me a while to respond as I'm not on here much.
I read up on that turbo and was curious how it would work on someones car. Thanks for trying it out and sharing your experience.
Yeah stay away from all of Blouch's hybrid setups. Their 2.5R Polka Pickle is being a big slap in the face for many over on Nasioc. It's barely making what the 20g makes and it has to do it at more boost all while maxing out the MAF. It's just not an efficient setup. True and proven FTW! Research any turbo options and don't be a guinea pig unless you are getting one hell of a deal.
^^ true words. I had the extra turbo, and it isn't much to have the work done, so I figured what the hell... but now wish I hadn't. It's all good though- this turbo would be a good upgrade for someone who's looking to stay around 300 or so whp. Now if Blouch installed a larger compressor housing and not just the wheel, I believe all these issues would disappear.
Thanks for sharing the experience... It seems like there are a bunch of mixed reviews floating around. It's nice that we can take your experience and trust it.
