I feel your pain. I have swapped out my block twice in the past six months.

I bet your problem is bearing related.

Liquid wanna clarify. I thought your problems were HG related? Something need to be done when going hybrid to the bearings?

He said he has a knocking sound. I doubt you would develope piston slap in a block with stock pistons in it like he had. Also the stock rods are pretty tough. If a bearing was toast there would be some play between the crank and the rod and it would sound like hell.

My problems were from cracked ringlands after 25k miles of abuse. First was #2 which I fixed by swapping in a new stock one. About 2 months later I lost #4. My choice in headgaskets led to a cr over 9:1 which I am sure was a contributing factor but not the main cause.

Now I run thicker RS headgaskets and have Mahle pistons with stock rods and bearings.

Thats what they told me. I'm glad I found this thread.
Well how much should it be?

I don't know man I would call around and get some prices though....

Short Block should be around 1500-1800 bucks
    Labor should be under $2000
Misc Parts(oil pump, water Pump etc... should be under $1000

    I would say $5000 max.

    Ninja edit.
This is not intended to start shit, but if hes getting charged 6200 for just a short block install he is getting raked over the coals.

I would ask them to itemize the quote...meaning what costs go where....parts. labor ($$/ hr), ect.

Just a followup post... I left SOG with a new shortblock thanks to will's hardwork.
I'm slowly breaking it in now

One word of warning though - make sure you ask for the exact price/estimate before
you give the go-ahead because I got jacked on the price of the parts.
They charged me around $2700 for just the block, seals and the pump.

I presented them with their two ACTIVE ebay listings for those same parts for $1699
LINK and LINK (These are SOG's listings)

When I showed the service manager those listings, he wouldn't budge but $250.
To me this was just wrong. I can understand a dealership needs to mark up a little to get by,
    but this was highway robbery.

As a new customer I felt they were taking advantage of my lack of knowing the market price.
I hate posting this as I've met will and he's a great guy - I know that he knows what he's doing.
I want to trust these guys and bring them my business but after this experience I will always have
    second thoughts.

I was tired, had a long day at work. I left work early to pick up the car and I didn't
want to deal with this and I paid with plastic and left. It was either that or I call a cab.

    :(

Jeez. If anyone wants ANYTHING visit www.thekingofparts.com. Tristian and Jeremy are great. They have the EJ257 shortblock with ALL gaskets and seals for $2,255.00. It used to be $1,995.99 but SOA jacked the prices on the parts.

Here's their site explanation of what's included.

We now offer a package price for our brand spanking new EJ257 shortblocks (completely built block) with a new factory Subaru: Oil Pump, Water Pump, Timing Belt, Gasket Kit, and WRX Rocker Cover Gaskets (you use an STi gasket kit, which has different gaskets) You save $$$$ and these parts are all almost necessities as you dont want to use old parts on a new block! We've done MANY of these and will be glad to answer any questions you may have!
