Okay well i posted this up awhile back about getting a WRX, and its down to the time hwere i am hopefully soon to be getting one! I had been looking for a 03 Cobra but those are few and far between so i am down to a WRX! I have been lookig at an 04 STI, but no silver ones have come around. But my question is... Power an dMod difference between an 04 WRX and an 04 STI! i mean i can get the 04 WRX for about 18-20k vs. the STI for about 24-25k! My question is it really worth the difference? Also the mod calabilitys! I just plan on basically doing the usual intake, uppipe, downpipe cat less exhaust with a blitza nur spec r exhuast! then maybe a tune! nothing major jsut a bit over stock then doing some exertior cosmetic work! i was curious as to for the sti if that price is really worth that much more! i now the mods for each are basically the same price, but in terms of buying them whats the major difference that can make it worth it!!?!?!?!?!?!?!? thanks
The wrx has a 2.0 liter 227 hp engine. The STi has a 2.5 liter 300hp engine. Haha, that's the major selling point right there. Other than that, the STi has brembos, better suspension components, a 6 speed (as opposed to the wrx's 5 speed), different interior, climate control, the dccd (can change power distribution between front and rear wheels, but not totally of course), and a lot of other little things. If you can afford the STi (and the insurance to go along with it), the price difference is definitely worth it. After saying all of that, know that the WRX is still no slouch. The STi is just generally a better starting platform. With the mods you listed, you can probably expect around 230 whp with the wrx and 300 whp (not positive on this one) with the sti. And a side note: Engine management should probably come before or at the same time as all the engine mods you listed. From what I understand, the 04+ wrx/sti doesn't like upgraded exhausts and especially intakes without a little EM. Oh, and also you won't need an uppipe with the STI, but it is an excellent mod for the WRX (it has a cat in it). Also, everything I'm saying is in application to the 04 models. Haha, I just don't want anyone busting my balls about different years because the specs have changed a bit in recent years.
about like the diff. between a mustang gt and cobra.worth the $$ if you have it and are willing to spend it.
I would definitely go with the better platform if you can afford it...And with that said I would take it a step further and get the 05 Sti vs. an 04 as well
Suspension and chassis stiffer +1 on the sti, brembos count for a whole lot as well! Save some cash and get the sti.
STis are a completely better platform than a WRX. WRX is fine if you're happy and want to leave it relatively stock, motor and tranny becoming ticking time bombs as you approach 300whp. Everything you get extra on the STI is well worth the extra 4K. Thanks for coming and checking the site out!
cool see thats what i was looking for....the insurance will go down from ym mustang on both the sti and wrx! also i can affordthe sti but i was wondering that for that much less i could use the money to throw into mods! but if the sti is that much more worth if i am going up to subaru of gwinnett tomorrow on my day off and looking at the two stis they have! but someone said when it comes to mods whats a good first thing to get, to get the most out of the exhaust and intake?
yeah if you plan to mod may as well get the STI. STI with intake exhaust UP and EM will get you the same power as a fully modded wrx with meth. Ask me how I know. then you blow the 5mt and could have had one bad ass STI. The 6mt's are nearly bullet proof.
I'd do an Accessport as the first mod (engine management). A turboback is a good one too, but I believe that a lot of people have boost creep issues with a turboback and no engine management. Also, intakes are pretty much worthless on these cars, and without a tune it is likely to actually hurt your performance. The stock intake box works very well (especially after the intake silencer delete).
Cobb accessport, like he said. It has stage 1 and stage 2 maps so you'll see a difference out of the box without the exhaust and other stuff.
lol didnt understand the accessport part but i was already set on a cobb tune anyways! for what i have plan turbo back exhaust set up maybe intake and a boost controller what would be a good one to go with stage 1 or 2?
stage 1 is a stock reflash. a stage 2 requires a turbo back exhaust. You don't really need an intake for the Wrx/STI, and if you do do it you will need a tune from the Seagull. Stage 1 and 2 come preloaded in the accessport so once you have that you are good to go without an intake.
Enjoy car hunting! If you go with a Cobb stage II engine setup you might want to to replace the uppipe with a catless one before reflashing the ecu to a stage II ecu map (this is done via the Cobb accesspor). I've heard of the pre-cats in the stock uppipes breaking under load and debris getting pushed out into the turbo. I think this is the case with the stock 02-05 wrx. The 06 and 07 wrx have catless uppipes which eliminates this issue. I'm one of several who went from WRX to STi, and I have to say the improvements are well worth the cost for the beefy transmission and Brembos alone. If you don't mind the 06-07 WRX pignose look they come with 2.5 liter blocks these days, but they may stress the 5 speed manual quicker if modded.
Going from an 03' wrx to an 06' STI, I'm gonna agree with everyone else and say get the STI. I spent close to $6,000 on mods for my wrx, and the STI was a 100 times better in stock form. Of course, now I'm modifying the STI too... but... For example, I got new performance brake pads, stainless steel brake lines and new fluid for the wrx, and the STI's brembo's win hands down. I got beefy sway bars/endlinks for the wrx, the STI handles way better stock... Now, the insurance people didn't treat me very well when I called with my new car... I could see the smirk on the guys face thru the phone...
