I went to the track last weekend (silverdollar). everytime i launched I smelled a ton of clutch. It never slipped but does anyone else with an STI have the clutch smell after a few launches or am i beating the crap out of my clutch. I had a 1.71 60ft time incase that helps.
When I've launch my car at autoxs and prosolos there is usually a slight smell... however I've had alot of bad clutch smell after a series of crappy launches usually when I slipped the clutch rather than dumped. Right now I'm on my second oem clutch.....
Now is a good opportunity to ask how much an OEM clutch/install will cost. I think mine is on the way out. Where are they supposed to let out? Last 1/3???
Depends on who's doing it. I saw 800-1200 for an install at dealer. You do it for the price of the clutch (300+). You will start to lose 5th gear when its time to change.
brian did mine.... about $500 in parts; we didn't get my old flywheel resurfaced but just bought a new one instead. Took an entire weekend to do.
Right now I'm in A Stock for SOLO II I have to use OEM parts for almost everything..... I have a hard time with the lightened flywheel on our crx.... pain in the ass....
Not completely true. If you go with the Fidanza, or similar 9lbs. flywheel or less this is true, but ACT makes a streetlite which is 13lbs. It eliminates the slow speed driving problems and the CEL's. Good luck with the install, it can be done in a day with about 3 people and some know how. Make sure you use the Subaru Service manual when doing this.
glad to see that I am not the only one with the clutch smelling. when I launch i usually do a pretty conservative 4k rpms then slip for about half a second or so. To many transfer cases, cluthes, and first gears in my old talon to have the balls to side step at redline with this car. (even though the tranny is A LOT better). So I am pretty new to subarus..they don't like light weight flywheels? guess i will be doing some searching!!
FYI you'd be better off dumping the clutch... I dump at 6000 rpms (it's a completely stock engine/em). I used to slip the clutch and get awful launches as well as I burned through my clutch. Granted I busted my engine mounts from these launches (with v710s) it's a fair trade
You mite have no problems at first but after a while you will. When you start getting Cell Misfire codes then i would worry. There is plenty of pages out on the NASIOC, I-CULB and etc.. to support what i am saying. All i am doing waring that its not a good idea to get on if its your daily driver.
