i`ve heard good stuff about these two pads, but i just wanted a direct comparison. i DO NOT auto-x or track race, but i am a spirited driver sometimes (although i drive like a granny most of the time). so a set of pads i`m looking for must be:

    1. quiet
    2. not much brake dust
    3. soild brake feel (stainless lining and motul fluid is on the way), but i want something that will last and will not fade
    4. reliable (dont wanna see warped rotors, etc)
    5. economical (as far as price goes)

and as far as braking distance, i already thought the stock set-up was more than enough for daily use (i locked up my tires quite often, so i know that if i wanted to shorten the distance, i should change the tires first- but i am very happy with the brakes on my car, i just wanna get rid of the mushy feeling (hence the lining and bleeding), and a little bit of performance increase.

Red stuff is a more aggressive pad. The EBC equivalent to the HPS would be the greenstuff. That has a lot less dust than the HPS, but not nearly as much bite. I like the HPS's better than the greenstuff.

Looking for the same things... even though my stockers have plenty of meat on them, I want to replace them with something that has way less dust. I can't stand the fact that 2 days after you detail you car, it looks nasty. Stock pads have more stopping power than I'll ever need so as far as performance it just has to be equal to that... bump for answer and maybe new suggestions... What about Carbotech, Ferodo, Porterfield?

any performance pad is going to have dust. If you dont want *much* dust get the ceramic pads. most likely noisy, and will eat rotors...but much less dust.

I've had both. I have the Hawks on now and the greenstuff before. Hawks perform better and more dust. Greenstuff worked well on regular driving and less dust than the Hawks. Hope it helps.

I used the redstuff pads for autocross and street driving. Quiet, not too much dust and washes off without too much hassle. I'd buy them again for that purpose.

Its not a good track pad, starts to fade when pushed on a track. I tried them at Little T and was not impressed. The yellowstuff is their track pad.

Yellow Stuff should only be used by intermediate drivers. They cannot be compared to some of the other brands out there (Hawk, PF etc.). I have never heard anything good about them (at least from the fast guys ;)

Subiegal uses the yellowstuff pads in her rally car, you can read her reviews on her site or on NASOIC. She compares them to PFC, Hawk and a few others she has tried. There's also a nice long review on some of the UK boards where they took the pads to the ring and up in the alps and beat the hell out of them.

I tried Redstuff pads on my 88 RX-7 Turbo and hated them. They were noisy, and they did nothing without a little bit of heat in them. Myrtle Beach is all straight lines and stop and go traffic, and without dragging the brake before stopping the initial bite in them sucked pretty bad. I didn't have ABS on the car and so what I found when pushed hard from this cold state is that in a panic stop situation you had no bite, then they warmed up and suddenly you were totally locked, several flatspotted tires until I got used to this. When you have more corners and more brake use, they wouldn't have been too bad... but if you have a lot of straight lines and low speeds... it's hard to keep heat in them.

I'd say that the Greenstuff pad is going to be a much better bet.

I can sell you a set of used ones. They probably have about 70% of their life left. Let me know if you are interested. You would get them for less than new, and at least you wouldn't have to be on them for a really long time to get a feeling for them.

I burned up a set of redstuff in one weekend at lil tally. Hawks have always lasted longer for me. I've used then from then on and have never looked back.

^^what pad in particular? I went yesterday and they toasted my rotors in 3 sessions, the pads had good meat on them but seemed to be breaking apart from the edges and scoring the rotors badly. I have the HP plus and cheapo ebay rotors.

    guys i need some help!

i`m really confused because EBC requires the vin number of my car (aparently not all 03 wrx sedan uses the same type of brake pads), but the Hawks HPS seller at ebay does not require the vin number... he says:

"According to Hawks Catalog these pads will fit from 03-05 WRX. If you want to make sure please check these measurements. Length is 5.39" and height is 2.23" "

and here is the link to the pads:

I have never checked the vin number or anything. I just assumed my car was an 03 and it was, because I have never had a fitment issue with my pads. $40 for HPS with 70%?

I've used HPS, HP+ and Blues. They are more aggressive in that order. HP+ are my daily/ auto-x/ track day pads. I'm too lazy to swap them out. :wiggle:

The reason why they need the VIN # is that they changed the brackets on the front brakes partway thru the bugeye production run. The brackets are what the pads are actually sized for, not the calipers.
On your VIN plate on the door is the production date. If it is before 12/02 then it's the older design... anything past 01/03 is definately the new design, and anything between could be either.

    http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/faq_wrxcalipers.shtml

My production date was 06/01 so I definitely have the older brackets.
