Ok, coming from exit 14 of 400 going to exit 6 (where I live) the car started to pull to the right. I didnt know if I had a flat tire or not. I should have stopped and looked at the car instead of driving it home but because of the rain I didnt stop ( dumbest move yet). As I get home, I was sure that I had a flat. Since I was already home and it was still raining I decided to take the wheel of the car and check it out, and found a nail. This morning I had my brother take the wheel to a shop. To see if could be fixed. To my surprise that wasn't possible. This is a pic of the damage to the tire. The tire was like, probably 90% of life left in it. Okay, now that I ask you guys . What would you do if this happened to you? Last week I took the car to Troncalli to get an oil change and rotate/balance the tires. On the pic below on the blue arrow. Is the "thing" they had place in the wheel. ( sorry, english is my 2nd language and I dont know what that is called) As you know the brembos dont have a lot of clearance. So this is what happened to the caliper now, should I go to troncalli and have them replace my caliper since they were the ones that did this. or should i leave it alone. The brake works fine. is just that I now the damage is there. and it kinda bothers me. help a fellow member out. Thanks
I'm confused... the 'thing' you pointed to is a weight used for balancing... I thought a nail caused your flat tire though, how are they related?
Wow, ouch. Id go back with them and have a little chat Now a possibility is that you could have had something wedge itself in there...
yeah. 99% of ALUMINUM wheels CANNOT be repaired. I assume the BBS' are aluminum? if so that's why. they are too soft and if bent back (made "true"), then they won't be as strong as they were originally. Think of the pop top on a soda can, same material. Once you bend it back and forth enough, what happens? It snaps! as far as the wheel weight. it surprised me that a dealership that sells the cars with those wheels on it, would know that inside the wheel weights wouldn't clear the Brembos.... so i'd take it back to them.
Looking at the pictures the wheel weights look dusty. To be rubbing on the calibers like that I would expect them to look different. Only way to really know i guess is to put the wheel back on and then rotate to see if it does truly hit.
FYI, I had the exact same damage to one of my tires a few years ago. A nail lowered the pressure then it disintegrated like that on the inside. I "felt" the problem going thru Grady curve southboud @ about...mm... a little over the speed limit. The rear shifted over a few inches and I thought "hmm tire must be low, I'll get it checked out". SOG showed me the trashed tire. Luckily the tire was already done on the outside too.
Sorry if I left a couple of things out. Because I got a flat tire, and took the wheel of the car. I saw that something was rubbing the caliper. And that weight was added to the tire after I took it to Troncalli (i'm not saying it's their fault until I can prove something ). Just to be sure i'll put the wheel on the car tomorrow to make sure that the weight is really rubbing on the caliper and try to figure it out what happened. I know the brake works fine, just some damage on the paint caliper. The thing is, I know it works but I always have in mind that the caliper is damaged ( missing paint) and it wasn't my fault. If I can get it fixed, I will go after it and get it repaired. If not, I can live without getting another caliper.
It sucks that this happened. The tires looks like the one in the pic. I have to do something about it. I'm not sure if I could just buy another one or if I should replace all 4 . And this tire is pretty expensive in my opinion. Since I'm working everyday without any days off I dont have time to go check these things out. I have to ask my bro to do these things for me, and he was able to find only one place that sells RE070, and its going to arrive on monday.
If the stick on wheel weight shows sign of rubbing on the caliper...THEN you have grounds for action with Troncalli. Otherwise, since its just cosmetic, and i doubt you can see it with the wheel on the car and standing 5 ft away, I would not worry about it. However, the destroyed tire due to the nail is all on you. I'd recommend finding another RE070 of similar tread depth (within 1/32 of an inch) and you are done.
Accually I have the weight inside the wheels too (just got new tires on), and after reading this post I went and checked on my wheels and the weight on all 4 tires did clear so I dont have that problem. :wiggle:
yeah, i mean 98% of aftermarket/aluminum wheels get inside the wheel weights. unless you specifically tell the tire place to use the outside/clip weights or they are dumb and dont know their earhole from their asshole. clip weights can damage the finish on wheels. factory wheels probly don't matter a whole bunch. but on STi BBS' i'd be pissed, especially if the dealer did it.
I have 4 re070 at 5/32 that I would part with...also dont worry about the caliper i have the same cosmetic trouble....just have them put the weights on the outside of the wheel..... Pm me if you want to know about the tires!
