Okay, so I am from Florida and its seems that things are done differently here and I don't know GA colleges very well and I need help/advice. So I have been going to a community college in FL but now need to transfer to a school here as I am nearing the end of my 2-year degree. My plan was to continue on the community college level and complete my 2-year and then transfer to a 4-year institution. In FL, if you receive a 2-year (A.A. or A.S.) degree at a public college, you are automatically accepted to any public 4-year school in the state starting out as a junior. I figured this would be the case here as well so I emailed an adviser at Gwinnett Tech to find out how exactly my current credits would be counted. I didn't want to have to re-take a bunch of classes wasting my time and my money. She emailed me back and said that I need to contact the 4-year institution in which I plan on going and see if they will accept my credits from Gwinnett Tech as well as my FL credits. ?!?! Apparently if I complete my 2-year degree at a public community college I can't automatically transfer to a local university. Again ?!?!? So here are my 3 questions: 1) am I understanding this correctly? 2) if not, which 2-year college do you recommend for an education major? 3) if so, which university/4-year college do you recommend for an education major? Thanks in advance!
Ashley, FL has it all whacked! I know TX does it like what the advisor told you to do. Each 4-yr university accepts certain courses so they may throw out everything you've taken so far or give you credit for some or all. It all depends on the university. I hope you took some good courses so you get credit for them. Otherwise, look into taking placement tests to place out of them and save some time. When I transferred, I had about 75% of my courses transfer, I even got credit for 2 semesters of language for taking 3 yrs of it in high school!! That was funny, since I went to high school 6yrs earlier.
Kennesaw is an awesome school to go to for education. It rival's GA State and Valdosta. You live in Gwinnett tho right? I"d probably say GA state then. Although the drive from gwinnett to state sucks (worst traffic ever) and GA state is kind of ghetto to me.
ga state is a great school.. i transfered here form tech and i havent looked back ... good teachers good people.. ghetto yes.. but there improving ALOT.. buildings are amazing.. and its got a GREAT education program.. the drive form gnett takes anywhere form 25 mins to 1hr
I go to Georgia Perimeter College, once you earn your associates degree at GPC you can transfer to any university in the University System of Georgia as a junior. I am going to Ga. State after I finish here.
If you wanna go to GA State but live in Gwinnett, you can always get a monthly MARTA pass, drive to the Doraville station, and just take MARTA back and forth each day.
I don't mind the drive. I think I am just going to go to GA ST next fall maybe summer and skip the 2-year mess. Thanks for the help everyone!
Hey Ashley, my brother did the A.A. thing down in FL. It worked great for him. Yea it sucks it doesn't work that way here.
tech wasn't exactly for me.. i just wasn't having fun ..my freshman year was horrible.. it not even that it was too hard.. my GPA was just fine.. i just felt like i wasn't getting the right experience. the professors didn't want to teach.. the students didn't want to be there..so i transfered my second year.. and haven't looked back since =)
