Does anyone have any information on the JDM EJ20G engine which if IIRC comes from a JDM wrx (possibly from the 90's, I'm not too sure)??

Specifically, I'd like to know details like:

--which bottom end components are forged?
--whether the block is closed or open deck?
    --oil squirters?
    --safe rev limit?
    --overall strengths/weaknesses?
--a round figure of the most WHP the bottom end can handle?

If anyone (especially you JDM savvy guys) could offer any info, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Forged rods, pistons, sodium-filled valves, closed deck, over-balanced rotating assembly. 8k rev limit. Also has oil squirters. Not sure of the hp limit.

A popular swap motor. Only problem is it fails on emissions tests.

1: Pistons, rods, crank (all SUBARU EJ cranks are forged)
2: Closed deck. (medium cast pressure AL alloy)
    3: Only on EARLY EJ20G.
4: Depends on model. STi Type R and RA is known to go to 7800 from the factory. WRX and standard STi is 7000.
5: Strong engine overall. Only issue is heat. The med. cast AL does not dissipate heat easily. You will need a STRONG cooling system with a BIG ASS radiator to keep temps under control on track/rally/hard mountain driving.
    6: 400~450 range.

The EJ20G/K/H/R (all turbo closed deck forged everything) were made up until the end of the 1998 model year. 1999 started phase 2 in which the EJ205 was in the WRX, and the EJ207 variants were put in the STi models, Version 6. The EJ207 with AVCS appeared in the next STi Version 7. That means that Version 1,2,3,4 and 5 came with the closed deck EJ20, as well as the corresponding WRX of those years. Also, any of the turbo legacys had the closed deck EJ20 up until the 1998-ish model year.

Overall the EJ257 is a much better engine. You'd want to use the EJ20G/H/K/R variant in a GC or older legacy if you wanted to make it 'original'.

Nice! I appreciate the additional info Will!

It has a massive Koyo rad. so cooling shouldnt be an issue. The reason for the ej20g, is that has already been swapped into the car. The car also comes with a spare complete ej20g longblock that will be built if the stock one ever lets go.
