Took the car out for a drive today after getting the heads and the new clutch installed. The heads/cams changed the sound of my car quite a bit. It's kind of hard to explain the change but it is quite welcome. The car is actually quieter. The idle is fine as well. The cams have quite a bit more duartion but actually have less lift. The dyno will tell how much an improvement this is over the stock cams. Before I can get tuned I need to break the clutch in. So far the kevlar 6 puck is pretty "grabby". Its about the same as the ceramic 6 puck I was running. I was hoping for something in between a ceramic and organic disc but this combo is closer to the ceramic end of the spectrum. This is probably due to the pressure plate more than the clutch disc. The RPS Max series has a pretty beefy pressure plate.
I hope it makes it longer than that. If anything breaks in the next 6 months I'll be parting the car out.
I can't take it to redline until the clutch is broken in. I did however user the thinner STI gaskets this time. The off boost response is a little better than before.
Sounds like everything is coming along well Mike....That Rex sounds like a beast. It was fast before all of this, I can just imagine how fast it will be now. Mark
Well I now have a new issue. It seems I am constantly bouncing off the rev limiter. With the old set up I could tell by feel that I was out of the powerband and it was time to shift. Now it just keeps pulling all the way to redline (and past). So for I am only running 21-23 psi and it feels way faster than before. Today it even got a little squirrelly in 3rd on me. I can't wait to get back to 28psi.
I am tuning it myself right now. Once I think I have a good tune on it I'll bring it to a tuner to see how far off I am from a real tune.
I doubt I can make it. The Petit is the the next week and I already have a hall pass from the wife for that one.
Sweet Mike I just caught this thread. Glad to hear you got all the restrictions worked out. What you tuning with? Street Tuner or Open Source?
Open source. I was getting pretty close with my tune but then I ran into meth issues. Not sure what I am going to do now.
Leaking pump? Didn't you have Ecutek before? Did you have your stock ECU reflashed to stock or something or you have a new ECU?
Yep. My pump is leaking. I sent it out yesterday to get it fixed. Not sure if I am going to put it back in or sell it. I have an ecutek ecu with an old version that I can read and flash. I can still use the live-tuning stuff that came with the 02 ecutek'd ecus as well. It helps speed the tuning up some but it is no where near what the access port / street tuner has with real-time maps and live tuning.
This is what I don't understand. I know for a fact you got tuned after I did. Yet my ECU is locked. Must be an 04+ thing. Oh well no matter. I'm going Hydra and I 'will' be tuning it myself as well.
I never ran a 2.5 na block. I just had one laying around. The heads are Version 6 with oversized valves and a port job with version 5 sti-ra cams.
