whats the main advantage over the ecuflash? from what i heard theres not much difference and AP dont even have 2step.(launch control) WEAK~
i wouldn't mind learning more about the flash myself. APv2 does have launch control though... unless 2-step is a different kind of LC
The main advantage is that the user can program a map provided by cobb, as opposed to having to get tuned. Granted it's not going to be as good as a custom tune, but that's what protunes are for Also, if I'm not mistaken, the new APs do have launch control. But a real man can launch his car without it
well i asked greg who has AP and he told me that it has one (launch control) but its not reccomended to use... wtf? if they have it why isnt it reccomended? whyd they make it in the first place... i just call it 2step cuz basically you are on clutch and gas at the same time to build boost. i set mine at 65k but with the stock clutch it needs to be lower... like at 5k... but enough about my car.
ecuflash is just a cable you buy and tune it yourself. unlike AP you dont haveto goto a tuner everytime you want a tune. if you have a wideband and a laptop you can log your car and tune it yourself. i know AP has several maps you can select but so does your reg ecu... its kinda harder to tune 2 or more maps but...
I don't think I'm ballsy enough to tune my own ecu. I'd definitely be afraid that I'd kill my engine.hnoes: I'm pretty sure that AP/ecutek have more tunable parameters as well.
Just side note, all professional tuner can tune with ECUflash, and you just pay the same amount of tuning fee just like protune. Cobb does have nice products and support on their AP, and ECUTEK used to be like that as well. Both will yield the same amount power level if they are done by the same person. I just wish that SS can tune with ecutek... just like in the past. TopSpeed might be my next tuner since they are the only ecutek tuner in metro Atlanta area. BTW, I believe that Cobb just doesn't want to spend their R&D to JDM ECUs. The market is too small for them to recover their investment. On the other hand, ECUflash is used by worldwide Subaru owners. Hence, it supports everywhere Subaru are driven.
Cobb has huge customer support. if the AP fucks your ECU...you get a new one. If the AP takes a shit...you get a new one. Both have nearly the same overall features and functions....altho the AP has quick map switching on a small hand held device. If you do not buy the StreetTUNER software...only tuners with the ProTUNER stuff can tune your car. With ecuflash you can tune it anytime yourself via your laptop. Support is only given on forums...somewhat regular software updates. So...you can spend somewhere around $1000 and have professionally backed tuning tools...or spend $100 on a cable and then use a laptop (or buy one for $300 used, ebay!) and tune it yourself or take it to a tuner.
i like havin the ability to tune on the go~ but then again if you dont know how to tune right you migt wanna let the pros do the tune... i thought there was more differnce ... well you get good customer service like will said... thats good enough. i like customer service.
AP has launch control and no lift shift..... I've used it for every run for the last three autoxs.... it's fun!
What does a professional tuner need to custom tune with OpenEcu? ie what do I have to buy? Or would you just pay for tuning time?
Ecuflash - is a SW to flash your ecu (or UL/DL) it also has the ability to change / program MAPS Tactrix is teh cable there is a good sticky by moose that is very useful - pls utilize it I use Ecuflash to flash Enginuity to edit and log Ecuexplorer to log tatrix cable for the connection between ECU and Laptop
Ok couple things to clear up I think. There is launch control from the AP2 but only for cars that have drive by wire throttle...IE Sti's and 06+ WRXs. I wish they had something for the old bugeyes but they do not. Some other additional features of the AP Street tuner software is the ability to edit the maps in real time when you are tuning. There are several maps that you can edit and save in real time rather than having to reflash every time. The nice part about this is your ECU can only be flashed so many times before it it fried. I don't have an exact number, but I have heard somewhere around 100 or so flashes. With Street tuner, you are just changing things in the ECU without having to flash it for every single change you make. With the number of changes I have made while learning to tune and adjusting for weather, etc, this is a real advantage for me. Not sure how good you are at tuning now or how often you modify your car, but the ability to make real time changes is very handy to me! So while ecuexplorer or enginuity is getting better, I still prefer my software from Cobb. It has been annoying on occasion and is not without the occasional issue, but so far mine have only been in relation to software conflicts with the serial-usb adapters that I use for ST and my wideband.
ther is no concrete evidence that failure of ECU is due to flashing ? Im already past a 100 flashes and i know of many that have several 100s flashes. Yes you can and some have fried the ECU and that can happen on all flashing sw
Not yet. The openecu/enginuity group is working on it. 99% of the time fried ECUs result from improper flashing methods or the flash being interrupted.
The awesome people at Tari racing are also working on launch control. I read it on the openecu forums a week or two ago so there is one less thing that is a "difference".
The one thing I wish that the AP DID have is some sort of optional output to a data monitor like the Ecutec has. I hate having to lug around my laptop to find out what is going on inside the ecu.
AP V2 has great Live Data Displays. It's the best thing IMHO. You can mount the V2 on the dash and have it showing Dynamic Advance... Siegel
