it turns out that the police found out that there were drug deals being arranged in this same parking lot. they came and talked to the owner (who gave permission for everyone to congregate there) and the owner shut it all down. it only takes a few people to ruin something for everyone else.
that's usually how it goes. a small group can ruin a good thing for everyone. I am sure you guys will find another place though. good luck.
