Pretty much ever since I installed my new clutch I've had problems launching. Its kinda hard to explain. Clutch - Exedy Stage 2, 3 puck clutch disk Flywheel - 15 lb. Most of the time when I go to launch now in the dry when I pop the clutch it jolts the car then it doesn't go anywhere. After that the car will rev freely with the clutch out, in gear until I press the clutch in and release again. My guess is that I didn't grease the input shaft enough and the clutch disk is poping back and kinda getting wedged a little for a moment. I've also noticed a problem when starting from a dead stop. Some times the engagement point changes positions until I fully press the clutch then release. Any ideas? If it does end up being the input shaft needing to be greased, is it possible to grease it throught he shift linkage hole in the tranny so I don't have to pull the tranny again?
Launching w/a lightened flywheel is different b/c of less rotating mass (inertia), which results in less bottom end torque. It must be slipped for optimal 60ft. times.
What I'm about to tell you is not going to make you happy. Take that clutch out and throw it away. Go buy an ACT and you will be much happier. Its highly unlikely that its an install problem. It sound like you don't have a high enough clamping load on the pressure plate and or the clutch material isn't the right compound. Good luck Matt
(no intention to threadjack, but this is somewhat related to the OPs topic) I was told by an Exedy rep at nopi that our cars use exedy clutches from the factory...is this true? Good luck figuring it out flip (bump)
Exedy has the worst customer service on the planet. I was asked to be in the exedy both and I had to say no, I've had nothing but bad luck with their products and they don't stand behind them. Matt
Hum. I might think that if i didn't have the little problem with the engagement point changing on normal takeoff's. That makes me think it's kinda sticking on the shaft. (i'm not positive thats possible tho) The other thing is that after I launch, it jerks, and then free revs, its just as if i have the clutch pressed in all the way. It doesn't stall out or anything. Its in first, clutch out and just reving until i press and release the clutch again. Its a pretty stiff pressure plate. MUCH stiffer than stock. The clutch disc itself seems to have really good grip while shifting and such and if i feather it. Any ideas?
Did you have another exedy clutch in a subaru though. AWD cars are really funny when it comes to clutches. Matt
Mine did the same thing when I first installed it and it's not an Exedy. You just have to learn it. Mine is really funny and funky. You have to slip the hell out of it and not let it bite so hard.
It was an Integra so I guess its not really a good comparison with power... Hum. I could live with this I guess but I still really want to know what's causing it. Something is keeping the clutch from touching the flywheel, the clutch is out and it's in gear... If the clutch was simply not strong enough to hold the power wouldn't it just slip a lot and burn the clutch instead of acting like the clutch is pressed in?
Really the clutch should be touching the flywheel almost now unless the pressure plate has redicoulous amounts of play between the friction plates when engaged.
ACT Street Lite Eh, dunno if i'll do that. It drives fine for daily driving (aside from the floating engagement point for clutch. sometimes its sharp like it should be then sometimes it starts a good bit earlier and is softer) and I don't launch often at all so its not really a HUGE deal but I'd just like to be able to if I want to. Also I can't just let things go knowing there is something wrong...
Yep, new flywheel. I might give bleeding it a shot. I'm pretty sure I did that already bit it wouldn't hurt to do it again.
Just a thought but I wonder if my tranny mount snapped too. My motor mount snapped so I replaced it but I haven't done the tranny mount yet. Its sitting on the floor in my car. Would a broken tranny mount cause that to happen?
If your tranny mount was broken then the engine would be flopping all over the place unless it's a cracked one. You are talking about the wishbone mount that attaches to the firewall right?
No, not that one, the one under the car. I'm getting a lot of chatter which might be the clutch just doin its thing but i'm not sure...
Clutch chatter is very typical with a puck clutch. I won't ever go puck clutch again I don't think. I like organic clutches.
Yeah. Its not really that bad I've just learned to rev a little higher to get going. It really does grab so nice when I want it to. So has anyone else heard of this problem with launching before?
