Why does subaru design a car that absolutely needs four wheels of the same size, but neglects to make room for a full-size spare? IMO this is a glaring deficiency in the design. Why invest in AAA? Subaru come with roadside assistance.
According to the manual, the proper method for using the spare is to rotate a good tire to the front, put the spare on the back and pull the AWD fuse. Why is this necessary if the rolling diameter is the same?
Asuming you blow a front tire on the side of the road, how exactly are you to jack the back up so you could get the rear wheel off, to rotate it to the front and put the spare on the back, using that crappy scissor jack that comes with the car? That is the downside of Subaru design. They should provide a jack that is sturdy enough and extends enough to jack up the entire side of a car, front and back from 1 jacking point.
In my case, I blew both tires on the right side at the same time. Driving down a gravel road, a rock sliced open BOTH sidewalls almost instantaneously. If I had been using 19" wheels I would have just had some nasty wheel rash!
I assume that for us 5MT guys, the whole switch the good back tire to the front thing isn't necessary since we can't turn our cars into FWD with just a fuse. Our cars require removing the driveshaft!
If I blow a tire I just call AAA I dont even carry a spare in my car anymore (its the wrong bolt pattern)...jdm weight reduction.
AAA rules especially the premium...cost is like 90 bucks or less and they tow your car up to 100 miles 4 times a year. You can bet one of those you will be waiting for a while just give them a call and they will adjust as to not count against the 4 per year. I have used them to bring my working vehicle to a shop to get performance work cause I was too busy to drive and get a ride back.
I did it the other week....got both the front and the back high enough with the stock jack to get them both off
Get AAA! If you get the '08 Impreza, you get Subaru Roadside Assistance free for the first 36000 miles. It has saved me many times in the past.
