What are some good street tires? I want to keep the price to $100 per tire and have decent tread life. I'm leaning towards some Nitto Neogens. They seem to be the best performing tires in that price range with good mileage. The Kooks Ventus are another contender but I don't think I'll make over 20K miles on them. I know clemsonscooby had the Nittos and he had 25000 miles on them plus a full season of autox. Size will be 225/45/17.
www.edgeracing.com has the Falken FK-452 on sale right now for 86/tire. I've had 2 sets of the 451 (prev. model) and loved them. GREAT grip, excellent in the wet, just a nice solid tire. edit: the 452 is in a 215-45/17 variation for 86/tire. It should still be under 100/tire for the 225 series
Both are over $100. I wished I had the money when the RE01R's were on sale at tire rack. 2.5RS my buddy has the Falken 452's and he loves them. I may give them a try.
You need to pay to play RE01Rs and the new Dunlop Z1s are in a totally different league than the FK452s. I put some Dunlop Direzza DZ101 tires on my crx the other day at DT (really cheap!), and they are alright, not super sticky, but a decent compromise for a DD.
discount tire has a special right now. $100 off any set of 4 tires, plus they always have their free shipping to go along with that. could put some tires in your price range.
Some s2000 guys who have been running them have gotten around 30k out of them, which is great considering how grippy they are. They have a decent amount of tread on them when you get them new. We ordered our next set of RE01Rs shaved to 5/32nds, as we are only using them for autoX. -- Brian
right now I am running Fuzion ZRi in a 225 45 17. I like them so far and I've got around 20K on them with some more tread left - at least another 10K. For the price, I dont think I could have asked for more. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Fuzion&tireModel=ZRi
Fuzions were okay on my Honda but I didn't like them for some reason. Kumho's are out of the question....I HATE the ones I have now.
I have SPTs as well...I can say that the treadwear is phenomenal, wet grip is very good (lots of rain grooves). Can't really comment on the dry grip as my only comparison on my WRX is the RE-92s, lol. I will say that if you are looking for a DD tire that will last seemingly forever, get the SPTs
Every set of Kumhos I've ever gotten has failed drastically for me. 2 sets had belt failures. One set constantly slow leaked. I've pretty much banned them for my car.
BLECH!! I had those tires on the car for about 4 months. I hated every minute of them. At least you like them
Any opinions on these? http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findTireDetail.do?cs=235&pc=28752&rd=17&ar=45 For $248 shipped I think it's a good deal.
my opinion is that the tires make the car. they are the single most important part. You can buy cheap/crappy tires, but you're giving up 20-30% of your car's handling/braking capabilities. It just doesn't make sense to do that. If you're really hurting and you just can't afford to have fun for the next 30K, I totally understand that. But if you're looking into other mods (power, suspension, cosmetics...) in the next 30K, you're pissing in the wind. When I build up a car I want to drive hard I start with buying great tires, then do brakes, then suspension... and so on. Just bite the bullet and get RE01Rs. You'll be happy you did.
for a dollar less, you get the 452 from edgeracing...MUCH improved tire. the 512 has been discontinued, yet the price on it has increased...go figure. I've had friends who hated that tire. my buddy gets them for drifting....aka NO grip!
I understand that the tyres make or break the car and these aren't the normal cheap ass tyres, it's just that there's a hell of a sale going on. I've got a friend with a 240zx who absolutely loves them which surprises about the drifting comment. I currently run G force sports for daily driving but their lifespan is reaching it's twilight years.
Hmmm I could get the fk-452's for $324 shipped, not too bad Any thoughts on these? http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findTireDetail.do?c=2&sw=false&cs=235&pc=28715&rd=17&ar=45
coming from the 451, the grip in both dry and wet was horrible. they are a lot noisier than the other tires I've had, and a LOT more tire flex....I had them for 4 months and turned them in for full refund (the tire shop was supposed to have ordered the 2nd set of 451's within the 30 day trial period, but took them forever to get)
What complaints did your mate have about the 512's? I read some problems about the soft rubber being a problem on the outer parts of the tyre, which does ring true as that's where the majority of where has taken place on my mates tyres.
lack of grip was primarily the issue. they WERE a cheap tire, but like I said before, with them being discontinued, they upped the price
Yet another tyre, what do you think of these Azeni's? I'm not looking for autox performance on this set. Mainly a good priced daily driver with some fun driving too. Longetivity is the main thing I want. I'm coming from BFG sports so I don't want to step down in terms of performance really. http://www.discounttiredirect.com/d...p=Passenger/Performance&rd=17&ar=40&tc=FALHZ6
those are about the same as the 512. if you're going with a Falken, the 452 is the best all around tire to go with.
Ok then... I think I have settled, what do you think of these: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/d...p=Passenger/Performance&rd=17&ar=40&tc=FALHZB I think I'm gonna stick with 215 instead of 225 for regular/fun driving.
And by the way you're promoting them I assume you own the 452's Matt. I dunno, when I look at the pictures the sidewall looks like it has alot of void space, they look more like all seasons than performance orientated.
I don't know, I really like the RE-01R, and the Ziex 512 tires that came on my CRX were uber shitty. If you want to get any kind of performance out of your car, at least get a decent set of tires. I would eat nothing but Ramen for a week if it was the only way that I could save up extra cash to get decent tires.
I'm not trying to skimp out by any means, but I would rather save money than waste it. I have some bf goodrich g force sports that cost a fair amount and by no means will I skimp out. I'm simply trying to find out which is the better tyre while at the same time taking the price differences into account.
I haven't gotten the 452's as of yet, but having 2 sets of the 451 (it's predecessor) and reading review after review of the 452 being better makes me a believer. I'm currently rocking a set of Toyo proxes 4 on the 17's and Hankook RS-2's on the 16's. I LOVE the RS-2's. the Proxes4 are ok.... I'm saving up for a set of 452 (both of these sets of tires were free) The tread pattern should prove that they are indeed a performance tire and not an all season. edgeracing.com has them for 86/tire in a 215/45-17 size.
My buddy has the 452's and he likes them. Another friend also has the 512 and he says he likes them but they look horrible.....they look all skinny on his rims.
that's not soft side rubber, that's sidewall flex in turns which will cause the outter edge of the tire to be eaten away. You'll get the same lifespan out of 360 treadwear with soft sidewalls as 140 treadwear with firm sidewalls. You can bump the PSI way up, but you'll only lose more grip by doing that. While we're working on getting you to buy real tires, I'd like to go ahead and rule out the Falken 615 fo you due to the need to drive it in the rain, even when it's getting worn down. They do not handle standing water at all! What about the Hankook RS2 or whatever that is? Those aren't that expensive and work well. Not great, but well.
 look I'm not trying to buy shitty tyres! I'm just trying to get info on all of the alternatives rather than just dropping a big chunk of change without checking out the whole market. The 615's look absolutely awesome and will probably end up on the autox rims at some point in the future. So far I'm leaning towards the 452's in 215/40/17. I currently have BF Goodrich G Force Sports in 215/45/17, will I notice much of an improvement? I still like these, http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findTireDetail.do?cs=215&pc=38451&rd=17&ar=40 Especially when they come up $286 for all 4 shipped I lean towards them.
With coilovers do 225/45/17 or 235/40/17 if your wheels are big enough. You'll love the extra traction with the stiff suspension.
