I have an 02 WRX. I just got the RA gears and need a place to install them and a clutch. I live in Columbus Ga. (100 miles South/West of Atl.) Trying to find a reliable/affordable place to get them installed. If someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it, and how much I should be looking at it for the work. My gears are fine now, but clutch is slipping, so I figured I would get both done at the same time. Thanx, Dan
Well Dan, first off welcome to the site. I have the RA set and like them alot but if you have not dusted a gear I would not get into that cost just yet. Removal of the tranny alone is probably 600 and the benchtime on the gears will run you about 800 or more. Replacing the clutch is one thing you could do yourself but I would not even crack the case of the tranny and get into doing gears. Mine was done at Prestige Subaru in NC and they had to redo it cause they allowed junk to get into the case and it threw a bearing. I would shop around for good tranny shop in your area and print out the 5mt instruction manual it is detailed and let them have a look and see if they would take a shot. I understand that it is not difficult but most shops get all nervous with AWD tranny's. Good luck and again welcome to the site
Its worth it to ship youre tranny to andrewtech. I have a spare tranny you could ship to gearboxtech.com if you would like that way youre car wouldn't be down. Drop me a PM Matt
Also, there are a ton of special tools needed to do the job correctly. Make sure to find someone who has done the job before. The labor time for the gearset with the transmission already out of the car (aka you take it out and hand it to the tech) is anywhere between $700 and $1000 depending on the labor rate (time is 10 hrs) and whatever other parts are needed. If you take the car to get the gearset and clutch done at the same time...just labor will run you $1200 to $1600...again depending on the labor rate at the shop (16 hrs total labor). I can do the gearset here (Mt. Airy NC, about 6~7 hrs from you) for $750+whatever additional parts are needed, if you hand me the transmission. Otherwise if you bring the whole car its $1200+parts. I have done a few RA sets before. Also, it should take no longer than 4~5 days to get it done. But if its not broke, dont fix it. And when it DOES break...DO NOT DRIVE IT after it has broken. The farther you drive after its broke, the more damage is done and eventually the whole thing will be toast. Its like running an engine with a rod knock...the longer it runs, the more damage is done. LiquidForce or pEd here, or mpaone on NASIOC can get the job done at their places for low low prices. Edit: AndrewTech does good work.
Hey Dan. Im from columbus and still have family there. One weekend when we are both free I can come down and help take out the tranny to help save the labor cost of having a shop done. I also have a wagon so I can help transport it to whatever shop you decide to use to save freight charges. Its good to see a fellow wrx enthusiast in my home town. You wouldnt happen to be the black one that works at the wheel shop are you? If so I met you already.
Got the gears for 1550 shipped w/ cryo/microfinish. techlord: where can I print out the 5mt instruction manual? I am talking to a guy who swears he can do it, but he has never worked on a Subaru before. He told me 800 for everything, but I don't trust him 100%. I showed him the gears and he still says he can do it. A new Subaru dealership just opened and they said they won't touch after market parts. I got a quote from Top Speed in Atl. and they said 900 which is good, but 500 to do the clutch. I am going to call back and maybe talk to someone else. I thought about calling Knowledge and Battleground too. WJM: "LiquidForce or pEd here, or mpaone on NASIOC can get the job done at their places for low low prices" do they own shops or just do work on the side. I want to try to get w/ a someone who does good work because in the next yr. I will want the engine rebuilt and bigger turbo put on. I have a stage 2 (Turbo XS ) now. YounDZ: I will let you know if I decide to take it out myself and send it somewhere. I have a friend what has all the tools to do it. I actually live in Hamilton now. I have a silver wagon, and I work at, well lets just say I work for the city LEO I see alot more WRX's and STi's but mainly soldiers. Thanx for the welcome, this was my first post, but you can see I signed up a long time ago, Aug. 2004
If someone swears they can do a Suby tranny but never has then run far far away. A local transmission specialist (he is awesome on all trannies but the Subaru) did my buddies and it was never right and my buddy ended up getting a 6MT. There are several Subaru special tools involved and the transmission gears have to be 'DEAD' on their marks or you will chew the new gears all up.
we wont do the rebuild in house, we use a transmission shop that rebuilds trannys for a living. He has rebuilt some scooby trannies as well as a few of our customers GETRAG 2J transmissions. To take the trans out and install we charge 7 hours (7x$80=560) As far as installing the gearset goes, id have to check with out shop but im betting its around 800-1000
I helped Ped and Steven King pull my motor out to change the clutch in a day. Notice I said I helped them. They are great. I dont think they are too fond of dropping a tranny though. If you drop it yourself we can change the clutch too. This will easily save you mad $$$ given the quotes you got. Then you can just use that money to pay a shop to do the gears. Silver bugeye wagon with the cf hood? I think I know you.
i don't have a carbon fiber hood, but I think I know who you are talking about. I think you are talking about the WRX that Jason owned (PTAP), but I haven't seen that car in a long time. If anybody talks to the guys that were recommended, can you tell them to look at this and PM me, Thanx, Dan
