Since a few nights ago, i was driving when it was just slightly rainy outside. When I got on it a little it kinda hesitated for a sec then threw a MAF code. After I reset it it drove really crappy, it would start to boost then power would leave them come back and go in and out. It seems to have gotten a little better now but its still kinda funky. I cleaned my air filter just in case that was it since it was really dirty. That didn't help much. I reset the ecu with my Cobb AP to get rid of the code. Any ideas?
STock. Oh and FYI, the car was acting fine today so I dunno :-\. I haven't replaced the spark plugs so I thought that might have something to do with it. Theres almost 50k miles on the car too and I doubt the previous owner replaced them.
what air filter? Ive seen the Green/K&N/Perrin/etc make the maf dirty and temperamental with the oil thats used on the filter. Use high power brake cleaner to clean the maf inside and out then used compressed air to gently dry it and it should be golden.
It's a K&N. I'll try cleaning it. Yep, but never had a problem with it before... aside from huge fireballs but thats ok.
So it was raining and it was really acting up this morning. It seems to be way worse when its raining. I'll try cleaning the MAF out today... Should that give me better overall performance?
^^in which if there's oil-dirt contamination the MAF and moisture gets on it it'll physically short the MAF *on* the MAF.
Oh also I meant to ask, whats a good filter? Should I just go back to using stock filters or is there another brand that is better than stock but will work as well as the K&N without the side effects?
they aren't my non-turbo lugnuts, I know that!! on second thought, mine has been acting funny past 2 days as well....I think it's the rain. Car isn't used to it!
Just use stock filters. I have a better filter part number thats a SUBARU filter. I've had them in both WRX's for a few months. here it is: 16546AA080 its for the U5 cars (LEV/PZEV/LEV2) built for California. The filter material is MUCH better and the flow is not compromising. I noticed ZERO change in performance going from the stock 16546AA020 (stock for all non-California WRX/STi/EZ30 gen1/1990~1999 Legacy/1992~1999 Impreza/etc). However, since the filter actually filters better...meaning everything past the filter is getting cleaner air. Longer engine life/longer sensor life....etc etc. List price on the normal filter is $14.95. The U5 filter is only $1 more at $15.95.
So when I went to pull out the maf to clean, I found some oil over some of the hoses near the top. Not a lot just a tad. While looking at that I noticed a hose had completely poped off!!! My new clutch has a decent amount of chatter and there is no clip on that plug so I think thats what did it. I put it back on, reset the ecu, drove it and was able to spin tires in second going streight in the rain :-D. No funky boost probs!!! I'll probly still clean out the maf tomorrow or when its not raining so bad so I don't get soaked but atleast i Know what it was now. I might take a pic of where the oil is. Its kinda right where the hoses connect to the metal parts just in front of the TMIC. It wasn't splattered anywhere else i don't think so I'm unsure if it was just because that hose was off or what... Ideas on that? Haha naw, those are good :-D. Awesome, I'll try that filter next time! Thanks for all the help and suggestions man.
