Ok, here's the deal. I sold my WRX. and my friend who bought it blew the engine. he is in a different city right now trying to tear down the engine. he is stuck with trying to take the heads off. he said that he can't remove the heads without removing the back of the plastic timing covers. Any help in locating any neccessary bolts to remove the heads would be greatly appreciated thanks!
You have to take the cam gears off to get the back covers off and then remove the cams to get to the head bolts. Using vice grips and the timing belt as a strap wrench you should be able to break the cam bolts lose. There is a link to a service manual somewhere on this site.
thanks he got them off last night, said the heads look ok. he's planning on having them cleaned up and checked for tolerances before putting them on a 2.5l.
wound up cutting about an inch off of a 10mm allen wrench and sticking it in a 10mm socket...then using a pry bar...they broke loose.
I have heard nightmares about those cam bolts and some of the things people have done to their cars getting them off.
ok, next question. will the oil pan from the 2.0l mate up to the 2.5l? or do we need to buy a new oil pan?
and also, what is the recommended break-in period for the new block before tuning?? and did i hear correctly when i heard that once a bugeye ECU has been ECUTEK'd no other tuning program can be added, replaced over it??
Oil pan should mate up, it just is not as nice as the 2.5 pan. Break in period is 1000 miles to seat the rings, although I always did 1.5k with an oil change after 500 and another at 1500. Some people say to boost during break in because it exposes the rings to the boost they are likely to see during regular use. Others say no boost. As for ECUTEK I have no clue.
