    05 STI
    Kartboy short shifter

Just curious if anyone else has had any issues with shifting?
It is extremely rough like it is almost catching on something when running through the gears. It does not just glide as you walk through them.

I am tempted to toss the stock shifter back in and see what that does.

Just curious if anyone has any suggestion on what to check etc....

It's not supposed to do that. I wonder if one of your rubber grommets or something might be messed up....

Gear oil time. With the kartboy and all the bushings replaced...it'll really tell you if you need to change gear oil.

    I see.

any particular gear...or all of them?

    just about all of them.
I am wondering if something did not seat properly when i put the shifter back in.
I guess if I put the stock shifter back in and it still happens it could be synchros?

you put the snap ring back in the bottom where the rod goes in, right? All the nuts and bolts tight?

I dont like the kartboy for 3 reasons:

    1. the sti short shifter fucks with the reverse lockout cable. Its a PITA to get it JUST FUCKING RIGHT. That and its a PITA to R&R in the first place.

    2. it makes strange noises and feels funny.

    3. Feels like you gotta man handle it beyond the point of breakage.

So on that note...every kartboy equipped sti ive driven feels like complete ass during shifting.

i know the clip was back on. I may just go back to stocker and see what happens.

yeah....do that. Otherwise...i suspect what you may be experiencing is normal for the kbss.

One last question will. With the tranny fluid level on a cold car should it be up to the full mark or just below?

Full mark...or less than 1~2mm below the full mark.

did you just install it or has it been in for a while. If you overtightened the bolt that holds the shifter linkage, it will be very difficult to shit, mine is very smooth other than the side to side play i need to get rid of...need to replace those 4 bushings in the shifter linkage

I was thinking of adjust the bolt on the shifter linkage. I think i can get to that w/o going thru the full install pain. I believe that bolt is 9ft lbs?

something like that, just go by feel and use a bit of lock-tite/nail paint if you are worried about the nut coming loose, i really like my short shifter with assortment of bushings. Only downside is you will notice more of the trasmission whine.

Also check if you have enough grease where the round end of the shifter goes into the socket with the C-clip, it's easy to apply once you have the covers off. You don't even have to remove the clip, grab a q-tip and apply more general purpose grease, make sure you do make a mess ;)

The linkages were loose on the SVX and binding so bad I couldn't get it into 1st, 3rd or 5th.

Looks like its time to crawl under the car and check everything out.

I backed off the bolt a little where it attaches to the shifter. Still feels about the same. As matt put it . it feels very "sticky" when shifting.

It goes into gear 1 thru 6 but compared to a stock shifter( on a different sti) there is a good bit of effort involved to run through the gears even when the car is off. I shifted thru the gears in Clay's STI and it was smooth like butter. Mine sounds loud as hell when i start going through the gears in a parked stationary car as compaired to another STI

Not sure if the kartboy will void any warranty either in regards to transmission.

I love the Sti shifter I have in mine, it feels like ramming home a rifle bolt every time I shift!

I cant see how. A broken shift fork will not be covered anyway...stock or not.

Syncros on the other hand...thats a toss up. I've seen SUBARU pay for it most of the time as long as its within its powertrain warranty and the mods are not 'extreme'....we all know what extreme is.

Hummm...WJM what kind of SS would you buy? I am looking at buying a SS...but now not so sure.
I drove Chins with the KBSS and loved it.

well, to be honest...if I owned an STi....

I might consider replacing the bushings....but I would NEVER replace the shifter with an aftermarket SS. If I was able to get a deal on the SUBARU SS Assembly...I'd try that out.

The SUBARU factory SS is a complete assembly. Comes with all the rods, bushings, shorter reverse lock out cable...everything but the shift knob. Thats why it costs $400 from the dealer (unless you get a deal).

Lots of people love the KB. Others the Cobb...still others, something else. Then theres the crowd that swears by the stocker with KB bushings. Then theres the very small crowd that supports the factory SS.
