How does one go about obtaining an "open header?" Or an "open downpipe?" I know it involves disconnecting part of the exhaust system, but which part is it and do you just remove that part or what? Also is it easily reversible? Further, is it bad for the car? I was just curious as it seems a lot of people go this route to derestrict their exhaust and get that ridiculous roar. I'm contemplating doing it for the subie challenge if it's as simple as it sounds....sort of feeding the ricer in me. :naughty: Thanks for any help guys!
There is a electric cutout that you can buy that will allow you to run open downpipe with a push of a button. something like this... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BRAN...002QQitemZ120180812903QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
Open header is bad but open downpipe is not. It's easy to disconnect and reconnect. Like stated before you want to simply disconnect it between the downpipe and the catalytic converter.
You cannot take the catback off or run an open DP at the subaru challenge or any SCCA autox event. why? against the rules. I'll dig it out if you like, but there is a section within the rules for Stock, Street Touring, Street Prepared as well as the Mod and prepared classes for full body cars thats states the exhaust must exit AFTER the passenger compartment and be at a reasonable sound level. Usually around the 96db range. While there is no sound restriction at Turner, the fact that your exhaust would be exiting UNDER and definatly before the end of the passenger compartment means your car would not be legal to run in the SUBARU challenge. in other words...dont do it for the SC. Do it on the street all you like. Its alloying tho. However, the legal way would be to go to grand muffler and get a custom catback made.
Thanks a ton guys. If I go with an open downpipe is there any way to keep the exhaust tip at the back of the car without risking losing it on the highway? Also my car is going to smell like a leaf blower, isn't it?
