:wtc: Well 3rd gear went out yesterday. I was passing a car and was only 1/4 throttle and 5-10 psi. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, clunk clunk, rattle rattle......3rd is gone.

Now the search for the funds begins. I have money now for a WRX replacement but gonna try to swing the Spec B 6 speed.

Come on Will I need those part #'s so I can price this. I know just the tranny is $3500 new from Subaru. I'm thinking I may be able to do all of it for < $5000. The prices on those trannies dropped a bit.

I am gladly accepting the invitation! I'm surprised I'm not pissed but it was inevitable.....surprised it lasted this long. Only better things can come of this is how I see it.

    why not a STI 6speed?

  9. Cool_____

Because the Spec B is as good as it gets according to Siegel. And cheaper.

That and no fancy DCCD to mess with when installing into a WRX.

You dont need DCCD unless you are autoxing, rally or road racing.

Also no front LSD but I don't think it's 'that' important. I don't think I am installing the helical front LSD.

This was expected to happen at some time on an 11 second WRX. Think how much better it will be with the new setup :)

so should I send a correction on the Subiesport article? ;-)

  14. Cool_____

What would that correction be? It's still the stock block/stock tranny record holder ;)

One huge gigantic kudos to WJM for being the best! I have a complete parts list with part numbers for the swap. Looks like I have to go with the LSD.

Now off to get my special quote!

I'd say bad news but I know you've been waiting for this day so you can upgrade to bigger and better things. So with that said, congrats on the upgrade!

I've got a 4eat driveshaft (same as the 6spd) if you need one. Not sure how much they go for at the dealership but I'd let it go for $100.

I will remember that! I'm calling junkyards to see if I can find one as you are 5 hrs from me.

*cringes* Okay the LSD is needed and scares me. Any idea how hard it is to install?

    Why is it needed?

  20. Cool_____

    Cool_____ Banned

The Legacy open diff doesn't have what is needed to accommodate the speedo gear stuff.

Oh I'm going to be smart and let the master WJM do my LSD stuff. No sense messing up a brand new 6MT.

  21. WJM

    WJM Banned

I ran into this on thebigph's WRX. Got the trans and it didnt have speedo stuff.

Ok, order front case and speedo stuff.

Crack it open...shit..no way to mount the speedo driven gear on the diff.

    Order LSD.

    LSD arrives...YAY! it all works.

sorry to hear about the MT, but it really was living on borrowed time ;)

you will love specB 6MT. i love the 07 6MT, because I have YET to need 5th (aka "shorty") gear in hard accel. and 5th (believe it or not) is perfectly spaced for daily driving. keeps you right in the 2.5/3.5K RPM bracket at 50-60MPH.

you won't need to think about that though, in the SB6MT there is no "shorty"

    It's final. I'm getting a 2007 STi 6MT brand new from Subaru.....cheaper by a long shot.

  27. BKiller

    How much cheaper?

  28. Cool_____

    Cool_____ Banned

Okay payment has been sent. It's all said and done. I got a brand new 2007 STi transmission from Subaru for $3500. There are no more in the states as I got the last one but I'm sure more are on the way.

Total after getting everything needed was $4700. I had sent texts to Siegel and Milo stating I got it all for 4200 but forgot about the clutch. Decided to get a brand new STi flywheel and a clutch kit and a few unneeded goodies.

The Spec B would have cost around $5900.

Can't wait to dump my busted piece of junk on you! LOL

Really the Spec B isn't 'that' much better. Plus I have the option to control DCCD later ;)

Curious, was the 4200 the cost of everything to convert the 5MT or didn't you have jdm 6spd? I am looking into doing this in the future (along with 2.5 block). I just wanted to verify the price is the standard 5mt conversion.
    thanks and good luck

It will probably cost you more as I got the last tranny in the states. Both Will and my guy confirmed that there was only 1 available.

    I have the stock 5MT....if I had a JDM 6MT I wouldn't be in this situation.

if you really need the longer 5th & 6th from the SB6MT, you can just order those two gears later and drop them in ;)

Eventually yeah. I'm just enjoying knowing that I have the 6 speed of choice on the way as soon as everything clears (had to send a echeck).

    I'm still dumbfounded.
there are two 2007 STi trannies
one production year is 06/06 - 12/06 and is $4700
other is production year 12/06 - 6/07 and is $3500

Both are the same internally. The cheaper one is indeed a 2007 STi as there is one at the local dealership and I copied the VIN to compare and the same cheaper part number came back!

I've never had a 6 speed before guys.

Yes this is a BRAND NEW 6 speed for a 2007 that I bought from SUBARU.

yes. They will likely bring about 2~6 more to keep on hand until warranty runs out for the vehicles and then if they are still sitting around they will likely be scrapped.

    Bzzzzzzzzt. See above.

Congrats man let us know how the install goes...I love my 6sp!!!

? So what is the diff between the 06 and the 07 STi trannys ?

  43. Cool_____

The 07 have MUCH MUCH MUCH better gear ratios. 2nd,3rd,and 4th is much longer.

  44. FACE

    :( I want a longer 2nd gear...I love my 5th gear though...untill I hit boost creep this morning!

  45. BKiller

hmm. I would be interested to see how that 07 6mt works. I wasn't very impressed with the 06 STI I drove when looking for a car because it felt like I had to shift the crap out of it all the time. A longer 2nd and 3rd would be much nicer.

  46. miloman

    miloman Retired Admin

But the longer 4th is followed by the same 5th from the earlier 6MT right?

  47. slowwrx

    slowwrx Supporting Member

Personally I think the 07 gearbox sucks. The one thats in Beths car blows donkey nuts. The shift from
4th to 4th nets you a 500rpm drop. It almost feels like you didn't shift.
