Witch turbo should I go with? I am looking to have a safe 300hp daily driver.
I was thinking VF39 or a G16, What do you guys think? :keke:

Talking 300whp or 300 flywheel? VF39 should get you up around 270-280whp with supporting mods (intercooler, exhaust, tune). 16G will be about the same but with more topend.

On a bugeye with a stock engine and transmission, you are sorta really riding the edge of 'safe' with 300whp.

Or you could find someone with a dynapak. That way you could hit 300whp with a safer tune :)

  9. josh booth

    josh booth Active Member

Yes stock engine. Transmission RA gears ACT stage 2 clutch and Streetlite flywheel.

That puts you in better shape. Unless you get on a high reading dyno like a dynapak, it will be difficult to break 300whp consistently on 93 octane. I have seen a bunch of cars make 'magic' passes that get posted online but those same cars make less at other dyno days. Methanol injection, or race gas, with a decent turbo should be able to get you those results.

My opinion, don't chase after a number. Ask for rides in different cars and see which setup you like most.

That is very true, I do not want lose low RPM boost.
So that is best thing to do is ride along and see what I like that way.
    Thanks Milo.

I was happy with the vf22 and made mid 270's whp/wtq on a safe tune. It was a very drivable turbo. You can usually get this turbo relatively cheap too.

Not a problem. Coolrex has an 18g with methanol and his car is just stupid fast. I had a super 16g on my bugeye. If I had a bugeye today, I'd decide between those two turbos.

    Yeah I was thinking VF39 or G16.
as you can see in the first post.

Why not go with a VF34? From what I remember, it is a ball bearing turbo.

I am not sure what I am getting. I just want more power, That is the reason I ask what you guys thank.
Right now I am open for any info you guys can give me.
    Thanks,

    I'm not a 2.0 buff or anything, but I'd go 18G or 20G. Again, that's just me.:)

  22. techlord

20G is too laggy and the 18G i think is just right same lag as vf39 with more top end.

  23. GTscoob

Bah, like I said at the subaru challenge. I'm torn between a 7cm 20G or an 8cm 18G for sometime next year when i throw a bigger turbo on this motor. I'd say if you cant rev the shit out of the motor stick with a 16G or 18G.

You here of problems with the pumps but how many cars have you heard of having engines problems when the pump fails?

I don't knopw anybody local who has lost an engine. As long as you have a wideband (which you should have anyway) its real easy to catch a faulty pump. Unless its a complete failure even when the pump leaks some meth still makes it to the engine.

I was going to stop abusing meth but giving up 80 whp is not easy.

    ???????????????????

    PROFIT!

Otherwise, with the 2.0 you will be come unrelaible in the long run once you get to that 300 hp mark. From there you will be wanting more and more and more...until you HAVE to do the 2.5...by then you will be out of money.

Just do the 2.5 now with an 18G, or 20G...and be done with it.

I agree, but WJM I have a question for you? How much is typical labor for a 2.5 block swap? I am considering it, but I may just swap cars for the platform that I want.

I planned on an EVO 16g, EWG plummed back into the DP and Meth.......w/ the 2.0 though:squint:

If the numbers dont match I am going nutty Bavarian:ddirty:

$1360+parts and misc at my dealership.

If and when I get a house it'll run $1000 cash to me+parts/misc.

Last time I was there, SOG charged right at $2000.

takes about 2hrs to take it out and the same to put back in...assuming you have ALL the parts needed.

Well we may need a 2.5L shortblock install day, along with a WJM group buy, lol:naughty:

    hahaha.

if you straight up swap everything over and do it in a hurry it'll take you 6~8 hrs by yourself as long as you have all the know how.

I take about 10~12 and make sure everything is done right and all the Fuji Bond is dry before I install it back into the car.

i wish...but being a first timer...mine is takin over 2 months...doesn't anyone want to come help? lol... only reason it has taken this long though is because of my situation. i can't get the time to finish working on the car because i am trying to spend as much time with my mom as possible as her health is fading fast. all that is lacking is getting the two studs back through the bottom of the tranny into the 2.5 block and the TMIC and misc components back on. shouldn't be more than about 4 hrs of work...but i just can't get to it.

Do NOT put an 18g on a 2.5L. It literally falls on it's FACE after 5200 rpms.

02 WRX wagon with STI engine and STI turbo

I have an 02 WRX bugeye with 190k miles. I have been talking with Top Speed in Alpharetta about switching to an STI engine and STI turbo. They sound confident that the switch is doable and that they have had success before. Anyone know of a success story with this type of switch?

  37. Jake

that gets done, way too often to quote a specific one. hell 4 or 5 people in this thread alone have said they have done the swap. its the right thing to do, ESP. with 190K.

190k? Its just getting broken in.

    GT35R tuned to 300hp?

Top Spped is saying 190k on the engine is too high to beef up the turbo and add up/down pipes. they are sticking to their guns that the engine and turbo swap is the best long term answer. I drive the car 90-100k per year and need the power and the reliability.

then I'd keep driving it the way it is.

If it aint broke, dont fix it.

If your going to stick with 2.0L and pump gas I would suggest running any of the VF22, VF34, Vf39, or VF43 turbos. On pump gas they will make the same power, but with more tq and faster spool than any 16g, 18g, or 20g.

I would run the stock STI top mount as well. It is more than enough for the power levels your trying to achieve.

Doug (or anyone else) is the VF43 from the 07 STi the equivalent to the 18g?

VF43 is basically the same as the VF39, just with a larger wastegate.

IIRC the biggest turbo in the VF series is the 22, but the ball bearing 34 is another good choice

  49. WJM

the 34 would be the best turbo for the EJ205....tho i prefer the TD04L-13G.
