Clutch Assplosion

    Well,

I had just turned onto Mansell Road from Highway 92 and blammo, the clutch in the ancient turbo Legacy started making a "thwaking" noise and power delivery was really jerky. I pulled over at a living facility for seniors and called out a flatbed tow truck.

    While waiting I noticed that:

    1) With my transmission in neutral if I leave the clutch in I hear little to no noise, and the engine is running smoothly.

    2) but when I slide the clutch pedal out to engage all hell breaks loose and the "thwaking" returns.

I never noticed any clutch slippage or RPM issues before this happened, but When sliding the car off the truck I noticed the clutch smell was stronger that I was used to smelling, and I wonder if it's something like a pressure plate finger breaking.

Has anybody hear of a clutch spontaneously disintegrating like this?

It happened to me on my 300zx. The tines on the pressure plate broke off on it during normal driving.

I'm starting to shop for pats for this old-gen car.

I'm digging though legacycentral.org now but I THINK I may be able to switch to a standard WRX clutch. I'm trying to see what the deal would be with the existing flywheel. Froom what I'm reading the legacy flywheel may have less surface area.

Happened to me when I first got my STi no slippage or anything. "it just exploded" thats what the tech said when they changed it

    Thanks for the offer,

I went ahead and bought an ACT WRX streetlite 13.9lb flywheel for the car, but I'm stll trying to figure out clutch options.

I'm leaning towards an ACT street setup or maybe an RPS Max pucked clutch kit. (both sprung).

Does anyone have any clutch recommendations?

This is for my project car / beater. The transmission is a stock for a 91 Legacy turbo and the EJ22T engine is mildly modified, but the engine and tranny may not stay that way for too long. I know that the clutch usually should be the weak point, but I don't see myself doing any extreme launches at a drag strip and I'd like the disc flywheel and pressure plate to last a while..

i have a 6 puck ceramic custom made and the pressure plate for like 250ish

its good but a bitch to learn to drive and in traffic ull want to just cut ur leg off but outside that i love it

and the clutch is very short u can almost just tap and go

and he basically builds what ever kind of clutch u want

Thanks, I'm glad I can patiently shop around for a clutch, otherwise I'd have done a rush job and paid too much.

I'd stick with an organic disk unless you are planning to make over 350 ft lb of torque.

Also I wouldn't run anything but an organic on an older non RA 5spd.

Yep.. I was thinking 400ish+ , a dog box gear set ( if I can find one for a non-crazy price) , and a LOUD stereo to drown the tranny out.

    ..but I'm not ready now.

Anyone here driven a car with dog box gears?
