Yes you heard me right.....on demand oil analysis. A dipstick that provides "laboratory-grade Oil Analysis" live and also logs the data, and transmits via bluetooth to a PDA, Smartphone, or Laptop, software is included. Retail is said to be around $499. ~$30 for Blackstone Labs analysis + value of wait time The technology is WAY COOL!!! http://www.intellistick.com/product.php
i'm not sure this is comparable to a blackstone test at all... this just shows that you "need" to change your oil based on integrity analysis. blackstone test can tell you how many parts of various metal compounds are in your oil to let you know if/what is wearing out and will be damaged (now or in the future based on % found)... on top of breakdown and contamination (integrity) analysis. true a track driver or even a commuter could use this and it would help a lot, but it's not going to replace the long-term analysis of a blackstone test.
Performs laboratory grade oil analysis 24/7 Basically it monitors the depletion of the oil. For the methanol injected guys this is invaluable. If meth is getting into the engine so much that the oil is being degraded and depleted this will let you know.
did you read/watch the product info/cnet report? the data output is a plot of oil integrity. sure, it's "laboratory grade", but if it's not telling you what parts of aluminium, brass, iron, etc. are in your oil does it, then it's nowhere close to what a blackstone test gives you. all i saw was the "kauffman curve" being plotted on the PDA screen to let you know of your oil's state. sure, it's useful for more than just the meth guys, but it's not long term (beyond fluid integrity)
I can't watch that here at work but still.....it lets you know 'somethings' wrong. At that point who cares as you probably 99% have to pull the engine but it also can aid in saving from more serious damage. I'll take a spun bearing over a starved crank any day.
my point is that it is something you (and most of us for that matter) want/need, but it should not replace a blackstone test. i just don't want people thinking this is the "equal" of that kind (BStone) of test. it's not. it's a HUD.
And for $500 if its not telling me parts of brass, al, iron etc...I'll change my oil every 3000dino/5000motul and save the $ for something else...aka paint job.
The sensors are in place to read elemental analysis, but current firmware allows for oxidation, TBN, and contaminant (fuel & water) at this time only. There are plans to introduce new firmware in March that expands this lineup.
